Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has given his verdict on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy after the latter guided Mumbai Indians to a stunning 40-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday. Mumbai Indians had their back against the wall after being asked by the hosts to bat first. On a pitch where shot-making was not looking easy at all, the Mumbai batsmen made things even tougher for themselves by not applying themselves.
As a result, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Half of the team was already back in the hut with just 65 runs on the board. At one stage it looked like Mumbai would not even be able to cross the triple-digit mark before a fine cameo by Kieron Pollard guided them to a respectable 136. Pollard slammed 46 off just 36 to give the three-time champions something to defend.
But in the end, the score turned out to be more than enough as Rohit marshaled his troop brilliantly to bowl out the rampaging Sunrisers for just 96. With not much to defend on the board, Rohit never let the Sunrisers relax and shuffled his bowlers brilliantly to register the 40-run win. What made this even more pleasing was the absence of Lasith Malinga. Debutant Alazrri Joseph was the star of the show, picking up a record 6 for 12 to condemn the Sunrisers to their lowest total in the IPL.
And as soon as the game finished, Michael Vaughan took to Twitter to praise Rohit for his captaincy. The Ashes-winning skipper called Rohit ‘a very very good captain’, writing, “Rohit Sharma is a very very good captain …. #IPL2019”

Rohit delighted
Rohit, meanwhile, said he was very pleased with the team’s effort as Mumbai registered their third win of the season. He also had a word of praise for Alzarri. “Yes, very pleased. Winning the game is obviously a great result. I thought 136 wasn’t a great batting effort, but we bowled in the right areas, kept them guessing all the time and held our nerves. We were in the game till the last ball which is what we spoke of. It was a sensational bowling effort from Alzarri, to bowl like this in first game. He’s come in on a lot of confidence from the CPL and he’s carrying it here,” he said.
