IPL 2019 might be breakout season for Mayank Agarwal, feels KXIP coach Mike Hesson

King XI Punjab (KXIP) had a brilliant start to their IPL 2018 as the new look team under the leadership of Ravichandran Ashwin looked to dominate the tournament. Players like Chris Gayle, KL Rahul and Mujeeb Ur Rahman lit up the IPL with their performances. It was only a stroke of bad performances in the second half that ruined their chances of making it into the final four.

This time around, their batting will be dependent on the batsmen from Karnataka like KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair. The trio formed a brilliant batting lineup for KXIP last season, but Mayank failed to fire on important moments. However, the new head coach of the Punjab based franchise, Mike Hesson, this year could be the year of the young Indian Test opener who recently helped Karnataka win the domestic T20 tournament, Syed Mushtaq Ali and has been in supreme form in domestic cricket. Mayank made his long-awaited debut for India against Australia and impressed with his outing.

Hesson back Agarwal to come good

Coach Hesson is hopeful of the fact that this season could be the make or break season for Mayank Agarwal. “Mayank Agarwal obviously made his Test debut against Australia and he would have got plenty of confidence from his performance over there against a strong attack in different foreign conditions. So, look Mayank Agarwal has been an outstanding performer as I am sure you will know domestically in all forms,” Hesson was seen saying in a video posted by KXIP on their Twitter account.

Hesson feels T20 is a format that Mayank is yet to decode and feels this year, he has the best chance to get confidence early, once he gets his role in the team. Hesson said that Mayank had the technique needed to succeed in the format to play those important knocks.

“There is certainly something which we will like to see from him. He is a great fielder and a great attitude. So I am really looking forward to working with him,” Mike Hesson mentioned.
