IPL 2019: Most economical buys from the auction table

Just the way many anticipated, the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction threw many surprises to the fans. Whilst the franchises shelled out cash profusely on a few Indian talents, some other prolific names like Dale Steyn, Jason Holder, Eoin Morgan, Manoj Tiwary and Angelo Mathews found no buyers. Varun Chakravarthy and Jaydev Unadkat were the biggest winners of the day, who were sold at Rs. 8.4 Crore to Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals respectively. English young sensation Sam Curran, who might be available for the whole of the tournament, went for a whopping Rs. 7.2 Crore for the Kings XI Punjab. All the teams came in well prepared for a sensational battle and most of them ended up getting the desired result. While a few teams might reckon they paid a little too much for a few players, there were certain picks which were worth its weight in gold. Let’s take a look at the five most economical buys from the sale in the IPL Auction. 1. Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad) Jonny Bairstow of England. One of the key cogs of that unit has been Jonny Bairstow, who remains to be underrated despite amassing brilliant numbers as an opener in the ODIs for the Three Lions. He has scored 1,649 runs in 96 T20 games at a strike-rate in excess of 125. He went for Rs. 2.2 Crore to the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are still hunting to replace Shikhar Dhawan. The quality he brings to the table is immense and even the SRH management would’ve been surprised to see him go for such a moderate price. He certainly was one of the picks of the day. 2. Shimron Hetmyer (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Shimron Hetmyer. (Photo Source: Twitter) A young sensation from the Caribbean land, Shimron Hetmyer has already risen to the occasion as the future of Windies cricket. With a couple of blazing knocks against India a few weeks ago, Hetmyer started trending on social media and there were many eyes on him as his name went under the hammer. Surprisingly, he fetched Rs. 4.2 Crore and was sold to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Although that’s not a small amount, many expected him to get something much bigger and the happiest of all would be the RCB management. He might open alongside Virat Kohli in the 2019 edition and will add great firepower to the squad. 3. Sarfaraz Khan (Kings XI Punjab) Sarfaraz Khan. (Photo Source: Twitter) Just a year ago, Sarfaraz Khan was retained by the Royal Challengers alongside Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. After a disappointing 2018 edition, where he barely got a chance to prove his worth, Sarfaraz was sent back to the auction and as it turned out, he commanded just Rs. 25 Lakh to join the Kings XI Punjab. For a cricketer who earned over Rs. 4 Crore just a season ago, this is a drastic fall. But this will ease some pressure off the youngster as there’s no doubting his tremendous talent. If he can nourish himself under new coach Mike Hesson, he will be a big prospect in the coming few years. 4. Heinrich Klaasen (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Heinrich Klaasen of South Africa. (Photo Source: Twitter) Another player who attained global limelight with a few thunderous performances against India, Heinrich Klaasen for Rs. 50 Lakh is certainly day light robbery. The hard-hitting middle order batsman will add extra firepower to the RCB lineup, who let go some decent middle order names like Mandeep Singh in the trading window. Klaasen previously was roped in as a replacement for Steve Smith in the Rajasthan Royals camp, but failed to leave his mark. This time around, he comes in with very less expectation and that can do wonders for him. He will also enjoy playing at the Chinnaswamy stadium and it might not take a lot for him to become an instant fan favorite. 5. Oshane Thomas (Rajasthan Royals) Oshane Thomas. (Photo Source: Twitter) Another Windies player who impressed everyone in the recently concluded India-Windies ODI series was Oshane Thomas, who quite specifically pocketed Shikhar Dhawan with his bounce and pace. He bowlers in the high 140s will cause a lot of problems with his steep bounce. Rajasthan Royals managed to avail his services for Rs. 1.10 crore, which should be quite a bargain considering the demand which was there for Windies cricketers this time. Since he will be available for the whole season, the management can pat themselves for making a pretty smart move at such a reasonable cost.
