IPL 2019: Mumbai Indians likely to rest Rohit Sharma for the KXIP game
The extent of the injury is not yet known.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have won three out their five matches, yet are in the fifth position of the points table in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). The three-time IPL champions rose to the occasion the other night in their game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The visitors bowled out SRH for 96 and won the match by 40 runs.
Speedster Alzarri Joseph ripped the heart out the Sunrisers batting lineup after the visiting team couldn’t get many runs on the board. Their next match is against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) tonight at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the meantime, it has been learned that Rohit Sharma, the MI skipper, may be rested for the encounter due to an injury as per reports in India Today.
Rohit Sharma- A big player
On Tuesday, the 31-year-old Rohit was seen walking gingerly off the park, holding his right thigh while running during a Mumbai Indians (MI) training session. However, the extent of the news of the Nagpur-born’s injury hasn’t been confirmed yet, reports suggested. After lumbering a few steps, Rohit lay on the ground, holding his head in utter discomfort. It appeared like a muscle pull.
Nitin Patel, the MI physiotherapist rushed to the field to attend the gun top-order batsman. Later Rohit walked back to the dressing room following the treatment by Patel, who is also former physio of the Indian cricket team. The decision to rest Rohit can also be understood for the fact that he would be a key member of the Indian team in the upcoming World Cup, starting May 30.
This is not the first time an MI player has had injury concerns. Earlier, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah injured his shoulder during a home game at the Wankhede Stadium. However, the tall and lanky pacer recovered in time and returned in the away match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
