IPL 2019: My heart went out to MS Dhoni, he was really heartbroken, says Sanjay Manjrekar
CSK skipper MS Dhoni in the post-match presentation admitted that MI did fewer mistakes than his side did.
MS Dhoni must be a very broken man as he suffered his sixth loss in 9 finals in IPL history as Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings by just one run to win their fourth IPL title on Sunday in Hyderabad. Lasith Malinga trapped Shardul Thakur LBW on the last ball of the match with two runs needed and clinched the title for the Mumbai franchise.
Chennai Super Kings had done everything needed to reach their second straight final in two years and defend their title. They played some really good cricket, MS Dhoni showed some amazing form with the bat and with the gloves behind the stumps and spinners won them games even on unconducive pitches. But they couldn’t overcome one obstacle, Mumbai Indians, who defeated them four times in the tournament. Dhoni just couldn’t find a way to defeat the Men in Blue and Gold to showcase another trophy in their wardrobe.
Sanjay Manjrekar feels Dhoni was heartbroken after final setback
Sanjay Manjrekar, who hosted the post-match ceremony after the big final, revealed that the veteran cricketer was heartbroken during their interview and he has never seen him like that ever before. “My heart went out to Dhoni speaking to him in the post-match, he seemed really heartbroken. Never seen him like that before,” Sanjay Manjrekar wrote on Twitter.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, MS Dhoni was quoted saying, “As a team, we had a good season. But we need to go back and reflect on how we reached the finals. It’s not one of those years where we played really great cricket to reach here. The middle order wasn’t great, and today it was very funny as to how both teams were only passing on the trophy from one team to the other. Both teams made a lot of mistakes, the team that made one lesser mistake won.”
CSK restricted MI to 149/8 with Kieron Pollard making unbeaten 41 and Deepak Chahar picking 3 wickets for Yellow Brigade. Their chase was shouldered by a brilliant knock of 80 from Shane Watson, who got run out in the last over leaving Shardul and Jadeja to do the needful against a wily Malinga. With two runs needed off the last ball, Malinga fired in a picture perfect yorker to wrap Shardul in front of the wickets and won the game by 1 run, giving MI their fourth IPL trophy.
