The fiesta of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has caught up and it has hooked each one of us as the developments of its upcoming edition are already underway. One of the major developments being the retention and the emancipation of the players from their previous teams. The list of the same was confirmed earlier this week.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/bcci-quashes-media-reports-on-coas-advice-to-virat-kohli/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(BCCI)</a> had set the deadline as 15th November for both the trading window and for retention and release of players. There have been players who have been aptly released and retained, however, there have been some hard to understand and inappropriate decisions made by the franchises.

Here we bring you one player each franchise wrongly retained and released:

Wrongly retained &#8211; Stuart Binny

Stuart Binny had appeared to be one of the shining lights at a time, the Rajasthan Royals were lingering in the bottom of the table. However, for a really long time, the 34-year-old hasn’t put up any noteworthy performances neither with the bat nor with the ball.

His best season was 2013 when he managed to score 293 runs at an average of 32.55 in 17 games. But he averaged only eight last season with the bat and failed to take any wicket. Binny though tagged as a hard-hitting all-rounder, looking at his track record in the last few seasons, retaining him doesn’t add a lot of value to the RR line-up. Also, his age is not on his side and might&#8217;ve hardly made the difference if not retained.

Wrongly released &#8211; Heinrich Klaasen

The wicketkeeper-batsman had come to light during South Africa’s limited-overs series against India in 2018. He bagged an IPL contract for his exploits against the Indian spinners and was called as a replacement for Steve Smith. Although Klaasen couldn’t quite get going in the limited opportunities, persisting with him could’ve been a wise move since Rajasthan had problems with their middle-order.

His presence could’ve bolstered the middle order in absence of Smith for the certain part of the league and the chances of a good finish to their innings. The possibility of the tournament taking place in South Africa where he would flourish, further presses the case for his retention.

Manish Pandey came into the limelight during the second season of the IPL when he became the first Indian to score a century in the tournament. For years, he had been a reliable middle-order batsman, however, he has been far too inconsistent over the last few years in the cash-rich league.

His last season was especially disappointing. The absence of David Warner was immensely filled by Kane Williamson but the middle-order, especially Manish Pandey proved to be futile for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. His recent form hasn’t been good enough either with 19 as his best score in the three-match T20I series against the Windies.

He is talented but with the stats not in his favour, releasing Pandey would&#8217;ve been the good option for SRH as he didn&#8217;t live up to the price tag earlier this year.

Wrongly released &#8211; Alex Hales

Alex Hales, over the years has smartly cemented his place in the English limited overs squad and has been a pivotal member of it. He was picked up by the Mumbai Indians for the 2015 season, however, he ended his stint without playing any game.

His services were then sought by the SRH as Warner&#8217;s replacement. In his IPL debut, the aggressive batsman went on to score 45 runs. With <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2019-3-players-who-can-replace-shikhar-dhawan-in-srh-squad/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shikhar Dhawan</a> no more the part of the setup, who will play for Delhi Daredevils, the 29-year old would&#8217;ve been the perfect partner to Warner at the top of the order, hence, releasing Hales was inaccurate.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders

Rinku Singh, the Uttar Pradesh batsman was bought by the Kings XI Punjab in 2017 only to play a solitary game before being benched. He was then picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders keeping in mind his heroics in the domestic T20 league. But in the four matches which he played, the cricketer could hardly make any impact.

Retaining the batsman doesn’t seem like a right call as he doesn’t possess strong numbers to back it up and Kolkata already have a lot of middle-order batsmen and finishers who can produce the goods.

Wrongly released &#8211; Cameron Delport

Very few are aware of the hard-hitting abilities that the 29-year-old all-rounder possesses. However, he couldn’t get even a single game to exemplify it last season. He was bought by the KKR franchise for a base price of 30 Lakhs and have let him go off without even testing his abilities.

In 148 T20s, he has a century to his name with a decent average of 25.96. Delport missed out on all the games, mainly due to <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/stats-andre-russell-scores-century-and-takes-hat-trick-in-the-cpl-match/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andre Russell</a>’s presence. However, with the Caribbean all-rounder struggling with his injuries and with him crucial part of the Windies set up, the Knight Riders could’ve had Delport’s experience handy, if the IPL were to take place in South Africa.

4. Royal Challengers Bangalore

Pawan Negi had been touted for big things when in the 2017 season he produced 16 wickets in 12 matches. However, he failed to live up to the tag and has become a liability with each passing season. In the 2016 edition of the IPL, he was bought by the Delhi Daredevils for INR 8.50 crores, making him the costliest Indian player of the auction.

Contrary to that, the left-hander could only muster 57 runs in eight matches and scalped only a wicket. 2018 had been equally atrocious since he had played only two games, scoring three runs and taking a wicket. Continuing with Negi seems to be a horrible call for a side who is still chasing its first IPL title.

Wrongly released &#8211; Quinton de Kock

The South African wicketkeeper-batsman is known for his quick-fire batting during the powerplay. The 2016 season for the Delhi Daredevils had been the most productive for him, scoring 445 runs with a century and plucking two catches and the same number of stumpings.

However, 2018 didn&#8217;t turn out to be auspicious for him as De Kock could manage only 201 runs in eight fixtures for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, with Bangalore releasing <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/twitterati-unhappy-as-kl-rahul-spends-the-odi-series-against-windies-on-bench/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KL Rahul</a> earlier, De Kock was their best shot as an efficient keeper-batsman. Persisting with him would have been the wise move.

Wrongly retained &#8211; Mayank Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal has the reputation of being one of the hard-hitting batsmen in the domestic circuit. However, he hasn’t been in his best version in the cash-rich tournament. In 64 matches, playing for four franchises, he has scored only 934 runs at a dismal average of 16.25 which is hard to understand as Agarwal plunders runs in the domestic circuit.

Keeping him would only increase the pressure on the opening pair like the last season when KL Rahul was a lone warrior fighting for the faltering side. Agarwal didn&#8217;t even look comfortable while batting at number three and eventually was dropped from the team.

Wrongly released &#8211; Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis was retained using the Right to Match card by the Kings XI Punjab for INR 6.20 crores. But he failed to produce the goods on a consistent basis and never really got going. However, his recent form for his national team suggests releasing him was a mistake made by the franchise.

Kings XI could’ve persisted with Stoinis since down the order, he could provide the required pyrotechnics. In addition to this, the 29-year old could also be a valuable and a wicket-taking bowler and prove to be an asset on the field.

6. Chennai Super Kings

Murali Vijay had once formed one of the most formidable partnerships in IPL with Matthew Hayden and later with Michael Hussey. His greatest innings in the tournament was 127 against Rajasthan Royals in 2010 on a winning note. That was his greatest season, amassing 458 runs in 15 matches. He played for Chennai Super Kings till 2013.

Vijay then switched two franchises in three years but failed to replicate the same form in the subsequent tournaments. He was bought again by Chennai last year but played just the one match, scoring 12 runs. With the defending champions having a settled opening pair in <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ambati-rayudu-retires-from-the-longer-version-of-the-game/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ambati Rayudu</a> and Shane Watson, Vijay may not find a place in the playing eleven at all.

Wrongly released &#8211; Mark Wood

The English speedster was bought for INR 1.5 crores last year, however, played only the first match of the season before returning home for the Test series against Pakistan. He went on to concede 49 runs in his four-over spell despite starting well.

Although, Chennai have been smart enough to retain David Willey, Lungi Ngidi, and Mitchell Santner, in case of which one or two of the three may have to return to their respective countries for <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ab-de-villiers-names-the-favourites-for-the-2019-world-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Cup</a>, Wood, not being a certain starter in playing eleven for England, could&#8217;ve filled the void. His T20 record isn’t bad either as the fast bowler has picked 25 wickets in 22 outings.

Wrongly retained &#8211; Colin Munro

Colin Munro has a reputation of being one of the most hard-hitting Kiwi batsmen. He is known as the first player to score three T20I hundreds. Nonetheless, his track record in IPL has been nothing short of dismal.

In the nine matches that he has played, the left-hander has mustered less than 100 runs at an average of nearly 12. Delhi Daredevils struggled to get off to good starts in the batting front due to him not firing at the top of the order. Persisting with an erratic batsman like Munro doesn’t seem pragmatic since he scored only 63 runs in five fixtures in 2018.

Jason Roy is one batsman credited for having turned around England’s fortunes in limited-overs cricket. His highest score of 91 in IPL came against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede during the mammoth chase.

Though he couldn&#8217;t continue in the same vein, he averaged 30 in five matches. However, with Delhi also releasing Gambhir, Roy could’ve been the one who could&#8217;ve smashed quick runs along with <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2019-prithivi-shaw-thanks-delhi-daredevils-for-retaining-him/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Prithvi Shaw</a> at the top of the order. His recent T20 form has also been a red-hot one, scoring 69 off 36 balls in the lone T20I against Sri Lanka.

Wrongly retained &#8211; Kieron Pollard

The tall Windies all-rounder was first seen decimating New South Wales in the Champions League T20 2009. From there on, Pollard was acquired by the Mumbai Indians and was instrumental in leading them to three titles. His powerful forearms, range and his broad shoulder also makes him a very useful on the field. Nevertheless, in the last season, he had been nothing more than a liability.

Mumbai lost plenty of close shaves, mainly due to their lower-order batsmen not coming to the party. His average of 19 with the bat says it all. Pollard&#8217;s recent T20 performances have also not been up to the mark with scores of 14 and 6 against India and going wicketless. His retention raises a lot of eyebrows as the once a worthy all-rounder continues to deteriorate, rather than adding balance to the line-up.

The South African all-rounder, without a doubt, is one of the most underrated cricketers in the world. He was picked up by the Mumbai Indians last season for INR 1 crore. But due to continuous changing and chopping, the 34-year old could play only in six games.

Duminy could’ve been one of those players who can bring stability to the struggling batting line-up of the Mumbai Indians. His last four seasons had turned out to be very productive, averaging nearly 40 in all of them. Retaining Duminy could’ve brought a player of substance, who can run the ones and twos initially and later shift gears, in the line-up.

The franchises might have to pay the price for some of their surprising decisions.
