The Kings XI Punjab registered their first win of the 2019 edition of the IPL after they beat the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. At one stage in the match, it seemed like a lost game for the visitors. But a wily move from their skipper, Ravichandran Ashwin, got them back in the match. RR opener Jos Buttler was singlehandedly guiding his side closer to the target of 184 in the run chase. It needed some special effort to send him back to the pavilion.
Well, not sure how special it was, but Buttler found himself getting dismissed in an unusual way. He was ‘mankaded’ by R Ashwin in the 13th over of the match. Ashwin came in to bowl the final ball of the over and at his delivery stride, he noticed Buttler being out of his crease. Not letting the opportunity go, Ashwin whipped the bails in a flash and appealed. An appalled Jos Buttler looked clueless.
He tried talking to Ashwin about the same, but the latter kept saying, “you are not in the crease and you’ve been upsetting my rhythm”. The third umpire confirmed the dismissal and a livid Buttler had to make the long walk back after scoring 69 off 43 deliveries. After Buttler’s dismissal, the innings fell apart. From a point of being at 148/2, the Royals imploded to end up with 170/9 by the end of their stipulated 20 overs. They lost by 14 runs.
During the course of the game, the critics and the cricketing veterans blasted R Ashwin as he had ruffled a controversy on the social media by mankading Buttler. Not a lot of people appreciated his actions. But apparently, there was one person who proudly stood by his corner.
It was Prithi Ashwin, his wife. Prithi Ashwin was quick to take to Twitter to praise the efforts of Kings XI Punjab. She did not directly commend the actions of Ashwin but was witty enough to let the world know what she thought about the entire gate. She tweeted, “nicely done @lionsdenkxip.”
Here is the tweet that Prithi Ashwin posted:
