The twelfth edition of IPL has finally come to an end with Mumbai Indians securing a narrow one-run win over Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final in Hyderabad. With 18 runs required from the last two overs, Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga did very well to defend. It is the fourth title win for them with the previous three coming in the years 2013, 2015, 2017 respectively. Bumrah was awarded the Man of the Match for his superb spell of 2/14 in 4 overs in the final.
While the season was a turn around for some of the teams, few sides had to struggle throughout the league stage. As it turned out, Delhi Capitals (DC) was the only new team to make it to the top four with the other three sides being consistent enough to run away with the victories.
Here we bring you the ratings of each team in IPL 2019 according to their performances:
1. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 4/10
The Virat Kohli-led side got off to a very poor start to the IPL 2019 as they went down by seven wickets to the Chennai Super Kings at the Chepauk. Yet again, they were over-dependent on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers throughout the tournament. The two superstars did not disappoint the fans as they scored 464 and 442 runs respectively in the tournament.
But, they did not get consistent support from other batsmen in the team. Although, there were a few good performances by Parthiv Patel, Moeen Ali and Marcus Stoinis but only in bits and pieces.
There was no quality Indian middle-order batsman and the death bowling suffered massively as the likes of Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Siraj and Tim Southee were too expensive. The team ended with 5 wins and 8 losses in 14 matches and ended up at the eighth position in the points table.
2. Kolkata Knight Riders – 5/10
The Dinesh Karthik-led team had a tremendous start to this year’s IPL campaign when they thumped a strong Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets. But, they lost the much-needed momentum in the middle of the tournament. The big-hitting Andre Russell scoring 510 runs with a strike rate close to 200 and the young Indian batsman Shubhman Gill smashing 3 fifties and being adjudged the Emerging player of the season were the only positives for KKR.
IPL veterans like Robin Uthappa, Dinesh Karthik were not amongst the runs this season. The strike-rate of the former was on the slower side. Kuldeep Yadav only took 4 wickets in 9 games which was one of the biggest setbacks for the Men in Purple and Gold. With 6 wins and 8 losses out of 14 games, KKR ended being at the 5th position on the points table.
3. Delhi Capitals – 8/10
A lot was expected from this young team as it had the services of the former cricketer like Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Kaif in their dressing room. The team did not disappoint their fans this time as they secured the 3rd position at the end of the tournament. Before losing to Chennai Super Kings in the virtual semi-final of the tournament, the young side led by Shreyas Iyer did a remarkable job.
They started off the IPL with a bang by defeating the eventual winners Mumbai Indians by a huge margin of 37 runs. There were a lot of positives for Delhi this season which includes the form of Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant with the bat. The way Iyer led the side was also admirable but the man who stole the thunder was Kagiso Rabada with 25 wickets in just 12 games. Delhi ended the season with 10 wins and 6 losses in 16 matches and were rather unlucky not to play the final.
4. Kings XI Punjab – 6/10
The team led by Ravi Ashwin had a good start to the tournament when they secured a win over Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs. The team did very well in patches but was not consistent enough. Chris Gayle and KL Rahul were the best performers for them with the bat while Mohammed Shami and the skipper Ashwin did well with the bowl for the side.
The major disappointment for the side was the overseas duo of David Miller and Mujeeb Ur Rehman who could not do anything substantial in the tournament. They missed out narrowly from the playoff qualification and could win only six matches out of 14 this season.
5. Rajasthan Royals – 4.5/10
It was a forgettable season for the Rajasthan Royals as they finished second last in the tournament. They were struck with the mankading controversy in their season opener and since then could never recover. There were a few positives for the Royals In the form of Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson doing a good job with the bat. Jofra Archer was very good with the ball, especially in the death overs while the teenager from Assam Riyan Parag had an impressive debut season.
Royals would be hugely disappointed with the performances of all-rounder Ben Stokes and bowler Jayadev Unadkat who could not do anything special in the tournament. Their decision-making in the crunch moments were also not spot on and that cost the team a place in the playoffs.
6. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 7/10
The team was led by two captains- Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kane Williamson at various stages of the tournament. SRH lost to KKR in their opening encounter by 6 wickets. David Warner, Jonny Bairstow and Manish Pandey were brilliant with the bat for them with Warner winning the Orange Cap scoring 692 runs while Khaleel Ahmed was magnificent with the ball. The Afghan-duo of Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan were brilliant with their all-round abilities.
A lot was expected from the Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but he was expensive this season with only 13 wickets in 15 games. The Indian-duo of Yusuf Pathan and Deepak Hooda also didn’t meet the expectations while batting in the middle order. SRH played 15 games in this season, winning 6 and losing 9 matches.
7. Chennai Super Kings – 9/10
The franchise led by the charismatic skipper MS Dhoni had a blistering start to their IPL Campaign this season when they defeated RCB by 7 wickets in their opening match. They were the most consistent side in the tournament and were the table-toppers for most of the time. Imran Tahir and Harbhajan Singh were the best performers in the bowling department for them with the former eventually winning the Purple Cap. While the skipper Dhoni was instrumental with the bat for his side with some contributions from Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson.
Indian Internationals Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayadu were very disappointing with the bat with the former averaging only 24. CSK were the favourites to win the title this year but they went down by just 1 run against Mumbai Indians in the final. Out of the 17 matches played, they managed to win 10. With the ageing side, the franchise will now have to start rebuilding the side once again ahead of the next season.
8. Mumbai Indians – 9.5/10
The winner of IPL 2019, Mumbai Indians did not have an auspicious beginning this season, as they were the second best in their first encounter against Delhi Capitals. The franchise led by Rohit Sharma performed well in crunch situations and emerged out to be the title holders this season. Rohit himself may not have been much impressive with the bat, but his captaincy was top notch. The move to bring in Lasith Malinga to bowl the last over in the final was quite a brave decision as he had been expensive in the previous over he bowled.
There were a lot of positives this season for MI. Hardik Pandya with his big hits was a treat to watch. Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly at the death and took 19 wickets in the tournament. Malinga was expensive in the tournament but he took the all-important wicket of Shardul Thakur in the final and ended the season with 16 wickets under his belt.
Although Mumbai would have loved to see the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Evin Lewis perform in the tournament as well but overall they would be happy with their team’s performance. Out of 16 matches, they have won 11 and lost only 5 and deserve all the accolades coming their way.
