IPL 2019: Ravi Ashwin fined for slow-over rate offence against Delhi Capitals

Kings XI Punjab captain Ravi Ashwin, on Saturday, became the fourth captain this season to be fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate in the ongoing IPL season. Ashwin’s team was found guilty of not completing its quota of overs inside the stipulated time-frame during the match against the Delhi Capitals at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Kings XI Punjab lost the game by five wickets and two balls to spare. However, the game ended just seven minutes before midnight.
Since this was Ashwin and his team’s first slow-over rate offence, he was slapped with a monetary fine of INR 12 lakh. In case, Kings XI repeat this mistake in the remainder of the competition, their captain and players risk a heavy fine and eventually the skipper risks getting a ban too.
“Kings XI Punjab captain Ravichandran Ashwin has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 match against Delhi Capitals in Delhi on 20th April 2019,” stated a release by the IPL.
“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Ashwin was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the release added.
Before Ashwin, the IPL had slapped the similar punishment on three other captains too. The three captains were – Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma, Rajasthan Royals’ recently-sacked captain Ajinkya Rahane, and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli.
Kings XI Punjab suffer crushing loss
Talking about the game, Delhi Capitals crushed Kings XI Punjab by 5 wickets to bounce back from the loss against Mumbai Indians. Kings XI have now lost three of their last four games although they are still at the fourth spot with 5 wins in ten game. Asked to bat first, Kings XI posted 163 for 7. Veteran opener Chris Gayle top-scored for them with 69.
In reply, Delhi rode on the fifties from Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer to chase down the total in the final over of the game.
