IPL 2019: Riyan Parag wishes to be the first international cricketer from Assam

Against Delhi Capitals, in what his third IPL match, Riyan became the youngest bowler to pick up a wicket.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is often called the platform for young talent to showcase their skills on a global stage. Many unknown gems have been unearthed, thanks to the IPL. Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan, Jasprit Bumrah, the Pandya brothers are a few players whose name come to the mind.

It has given players from obscure parts of the country to come and show what they are made up of. One such player is Riyan Parag, the Indian U19 player, who won the ICC Youth World Cup in 2018 with the Indian team. Parag hails from Assam and was the first player from the state to make his IPL debut for the Rajasthan Royals. The only other player from Assam to play IPL was Abu Nechim, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in the tournament.

Parag played an amazing inning against the Mumbai Indians at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, as he combined with captain Steve Smith contributing a 29-ball 43 and helped his team register their second win over the Mumbai franchise.

Against Delhi Capitals, in what his third IPL match, Riyan became the youngest bowler to pick up a wicket, at the age of 17, beating the record of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, as he dismissed DC captain Shreyas Iyer. Parag celebrated his wicket with the traditional Assamese Bihu dance.

“I had done decently well and was hoping for a call. But being the last name at the auction was a bit nerve-wracking. The atmosphere (at Rajasthan Royals) is very friendly and homely. There is no junior-senior kind of thing. The seniors, like Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Steve, are open for discussion any time,” Parag was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

“When I started playing cricket, my dad said that I should have a goal. I told him that I wanted to play for the senior Indian team,” Parag said about his ambition in life after success in IPL.
