Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma was fined 15 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL code of conduct in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. Going for a big shot over mid-wicket off the bowling of Harry Gurney, the right-hander had failed to make any connection with the ball. The ball had then gone on to hit his thigh prompting the Knight Riders player to appeal in unison.

After the umpire raised his finger, Rohit went for a DRS review. However, replays showed that the ball had missed Rohit’s bat completely and would have gone on to clip the leg stump. A disappointed Rohit was then seen having a word or two with the umpire at the non-striker’s end before he broke the stumps with his bat. The IPL has now docked Rohit of 15 per cent of his match fee. He was charged under Level 1 of 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and has accepted the sanction.

“Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians batsman and captain, was fined 15 percent of his match fees for breaching the VIVO Indian Premier League’s (IPL) Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Kolkata. Mr. Sharma admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction.” said IPL in a statement after the game.

Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians in a high-scoring thriller

Talking about the game, the Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians by 34 runs to end their six-match losing streak. Asked to bat first, the hosts rode on fifties from Shubman Gill, Chris Lynn, and Andre Russell to score a mammoth 232 for 2. In reply, Mumbai gave a stiff fight thanks to Hardik Pandya’s 91 but eventually ended on 198 for 7.

“We kept losing wickets which could have added more pressure in the end. We just lost by 30 runs, if someone would have played a hand with him then you never know. In such a chase you have to believe in yourself. We needed partnerships and someone to support Hardik” said Rohit Sharma in the post-match presentation.
