IPL 2019: Side strain rules CSK speedster Lungi Ngidi out of the tournament
Ngidi was retained by the franchise ahead of this season.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) don’t have spring chickens in their squad with most of their players being above the age of 30 years. Yet the team, captained by the enigmatic MS Dhoni, managed to get their hands on the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) after it made its comeback following the two-year suspension. Quite expectantly, the Kings are again deemed to be the favourites.
One of the youngsters, who was a part of the Yellow Army, was Lungi Ngidi, the 22-year-old South African right-arm fast bowler. However, the speedster won’t be a part of the Chennai-based franchise as he has been ruled out owing to a side strain that he developed during the fifth and final One Day International against Sri Lanka at the Newlands in Cape Town as per reports in Cricbuzz.
Ngidi has been in decent form in the international fixtures against Lasith Malinga’s Lankans as he picked up at least one wicket in all the games. The Young Turk was drafted in by CSK last year at his base price of INR 20 lakhs and he didn’t flatter to deceive by any stretch of the imagination. The right-arm pacer picked up 11 wickets in seven matches with best bowling figures of 10/4.
CSK- The defending champions
The Super Kings drew a lot of criticism after the team opted for the old boys instead of the young guns. But the team soared above the expectations and won the championship. The Dhoni-led side won most of their games in the round-robin stage and was at the top of the points table. They had their moments of tensions but didn’t allow the situations to unnerve them at any point in time.
They beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad– first in the Qualifier 1 and then the final- twice to emerge victorious. Ahead of this year’s auction, they retained most of their players and didn’t have to do a whole lot in the auction last December in Jaipur.
