Sunrisers Hyderabad made it into the second playoffs in two seasons of IPL, but this time, they scratched and clawed their way into top four with just 6 wins and 12 points to their name. They faced Delhi Capitals in the Eliminator and lost the match by two wickets in the last over.
Kane Williamson has endeared himself to the Hyderabad fans first with his batting during the IPL 2017. Then the way he led the team in the IPL 2018 both on the field and with the bat, as he held the Orange Cap for the season and led the team into the finals, where they were beaten by Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. But the team was lauded for their spirit of the game and Kane’s amazing leadership skills after he was chosen to lead in the aftermath of David Warner being banned from the tournament for his involvement in the ball tampering scandal.
Kane Williamson says goodbye to the SRH fans
Kane Williamson, their captain had missed five matches in the league stages due to his shoulder injury. In his stead, Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the team albeit with mixed results. When Williamson came back, he managed 156 runs in 9 matches with a best of 70 not out and struggled to get going otherwise. Once the Orange Army’s mainstays in batting David Warner and Jonny Bairstow returned to their respective countries, the team couldn’t find another batsman to partner Manish Pandey, who had found form in the second half of the tournament.
The New Zealand captain, who will be leading the Black Caps into the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 greeted goodbye to the SRH camp and showed gratitude towards the franchise owners, the Indian Premier League, and the broadcasters Star Sports. He also lauded his amazing players, the support staff, the team sponsors and all of the Orange Army, who supported their team wholeheartedly.
Here is what Williamson wrote in his Instagram post, “Huge thanks to the @sunrisershyd, the players, support staff, sponsors and of course the #orangearmy for another enjoyable IPL season! The support for cricket in this country is truly amazing @starsportsindia @iplt20 #india #sunrisers #orangearmy”
