Over the last few days, it has been a lot of travelling for Sri Lanka’s limited-overs skipper Lasith Malinga. First, he rushed from South Africa after the conclusion of the T20I series to take part in the IPL. However, after playing three matches, he had to fly back to Sri Lanka to take part in the Super Provincial One-day tournament.
In his first game this season against RCB, he gave away 47 runs in 4 overs. But he bowled a good last over and helped his team get over the line. Malinga went wicketless against Kings XI Punjab and conceded 24 runs in 3 overs. His best performance of the season came against the Chennai Super Kings where he picked up 3 wickets.
What should be the combinations for Mumbai now?
Soon after he brought out this match-winning performance, Lasith Malinga flew back to Sri Lanka to participate in the local one-day tournament. He picked up seven wickets in the first match he played over there making it a total of 10 wickets within 24 hours. There was some ambiguity about when he’d return to take part in the tournament.
The pacer has returned to Mumbai to join his IPL team on the eve of the match against Kings XI Punjab according to Sportstar. The Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a great win against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during Malinga’s absence. In this game, Alzarri Joseph replaced the Sri Lankan in the eleven.
Right in his first IPL appearance, Joseph returned with the figures of 6/12 – the best ever in the history of IPL. With Jason Behrendorff also doing well, it makes the team selection extremely difficult for Mumbai Indians. The left-arm pacer might have to sacrifice his spot if Lasith Malinga is to be slotted in. At the moment, there seems to be no question of replacing Alzarri Joseph.
