IPL 2019: Star delivers record numbers in viewership for the first week of the tournament

The Indian Premier League (IPL) had shifted from Sony Entertainment Network to Star TV in 2018 in a record deal with BCCI and it had delivered on the viewership and engagement last year. Many had criticized the telecast of the T20 league by Star, but the 2019 numbers in viewership have proved everyone wrong.

Star TV widened the reach of the Indian Premier League in 2019 to many regions and languages with a focus on families and youth had paid off with a record number of viewers tuning in to watch their favourite teams take on one another in the festival of the Indian T20 league. The hard work of the broadcasters has resulted in a historical opening week in the tournaments 12th edition both in terms of reach and viewership.

Star’s “Game Baneygaa Name” campaign a big hit

The inaugural week of IPL 2019 recorded a historic opening with 283 million viewers tuning in across the country, which is 15 % higher than last year. A Phenomenal 33.1 million impressions were registered in television viewership, which shows a growth of 28% setting a viewership record in the history of the tournament according to a report in Insidesport.

One of the best innovations from Star TV that has led to this record and historical viewership was their decision to telecast the IPL 2019 in a variety of different languages. The tournament is being broadcast in 8 languages – English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali including Marathi and Malayalam on Sundays. The company has also involved the kids and family to increase the appeal of the T20 league with a curated feed of Super Funday on Star Gold, which has contributed to the massive growth of 41% in viewership amongst kids versus last year.

Star has also brought in the core cricket aficionado by broadcasting the matches on Star Select with their special show the Select Dugout, by bringing in the best of the best in class commentators and experts for all kinds of fans to analyze every aspect of the game. The opening week is a historic first and the world’s toughest T20 tournament was enjoyed by all members of the family including children and women.
