Time is fast running out for Ambati Rayudu to really make a mark in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to strengthen his claim for a spot in India’s World Cup spot. If the previous IPL was the reason that earned him a recall in the Indian team after a two-year hiatus then the ongoing season could very well bring an end to his journey in the national team. The right-hander made an impressive return to the ODI team, playing some vital knocks in India’s victorious campaign.

A century in the succeeding series against Windies further helped him cement his spot in the team. However, things have only been going downhill since the start of this year when India toured Australia. He failed to deliver in the tough conditions and did not improve too much in the following series against New Zealand too. Those indifferent outings had triggered the debate over whether he was the right man for India’s number four spot in the World Cup.

There were expectations that he would regain his form in the friendly conditions of India during the series against Australia.  However, his form showed no signs of improvement as he scored 13, 18 and 2 in the three games of the five-match series. He was then dropped for the final two games. And Rayudu has so far done little in the ongoing IPL to show that he can still do the job for India.

In the first three games of the season, he managed to cross the double-digit mark just once with his scores reading 28, 5 and 1. And his form deserted him once again on Wednesday during the game against Mumbai Indians. Chasing 171 against the formidable attack of Mumbai, Chennai Super Kings needed a good start but Rayudu disappointed once again. He last just 5 balls, scoring before being sent back by Jason Behrendorff.

The fans were quick to slam him for another poor performance with the bat. Here are some of the reactions:
