IPL 2019: Vijay Shankar rues not finishing the game for SRH against RR at home

Vijay Shankar earned a place for himself in the Indian cricket team with his exploits for the team on the tour to New Zealand and against Australia at home. Far gone is the instance of his infamy of the Nidahas Trophy 2018 final, Shankar is talked about being India’s batsman at no.4 in the upcoming World Cup 2019.

Currently rendering his services to the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2019, Shankar has been amongst the runs scoring 40* against KKR and then 35 against RR and helped SRH win the match the other night. Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down 198 made by RR with an over to spare thanks to contributions from David Warner (69) and Jonny Bairstow (45), apart from Shankar and the match was finished by Rashid Khan.

Vijay Shankar disappointed not to finish the match himself

Sunrisers were coming off a very close loss against KKR where they lost the plot in last three overs and Shankar felt that it was necessary for them to win against RR to get going in the tournament. “It is very important to start the tournament well, and this win was something that the team was waiting for. We played really well to win this game,” Shankar said after the game.

However, he also showed his disappointment at not finishing the game by himself and it was left to Yusuf Pathan and Rashid Khan to take SRH to the win by adding 34* runs. Shankar departed in the 15th over after scoring 35 runs, despite getting a good start to his innings.

“I’m very disappointed by how I got out today. I had been waiting for an opportunity where I had the chance to win the match for my team, and remain not out. I could have won the game on my own. But the good thing I can take from the game is the way I was thinking overall. When I got out, all I wanted to do was hit the ball over the bowler’s head for a two or a four. I think I got too close to the ball and that’s when everything changed for me,” Shankar was quoted as saying.

The all-rounder, however, feels that he is adapting his game according to the situation in the match and is looking to give his best in such a high-intensity tournament. Sunrisers Hyderabad will be hoping for another good performance from Shankar when they next face Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
