Veteran Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has made an undiplomatic statement about the importance of overseas recruits and their role in the Indian Premier League. And this is one of the significant factors in any franchise’ chances of winning the much coveted IPL title.
The overseas players play a principal role in determining the success of the teams in the marquee T20 league and over the years, they have proven their worth time after time. There was Brendon McCullum, who with his 158 n.o. in the very first IPL game in 2008 rocked the world and gave this league a whole new level of fame.
Fans remember Baz playing a blinder of an innings for Kolkata Knight Riders in the first ever IPL fixture that defined how big the league is. It was the former Australian cricketer, Shane Watson who guided the three-time champions Chennai Super Kings to the winning the title in the title last season.
There are many more examples that cite the extent of the contribution of the overseas players and the huge difference that they have made for their franchises. Former Indian cricket team opener Virender Sehwag believes that this season, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad are the two sides with the strongest overseas players quartet.
During their match on Friday, Royals fielded Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Steve Smith, and Jofra Archer while Sunrisers’ squad included David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Rashid Khan and Kane Williamson who made his return to the side after missing out due to injury in the match against KKR.
Rajasthan Royals skipper Ajinya Rahane won the toss and elected to bat first against Kane Williamson’s Sunrisers Hyderabad. While the Royals played with an unchanged team, the Sunrisers made two changes. Williamson returned to lead the SRH in place of Shakib Al Hasan, while Deepak Hooda made way for Shahbaz Nadeem.
Sehwag reveals his favourite overseas players in IPL 2019
“Jos Buttler, Stokes, Smith, Archer- RR. Warner, Bairstow, Williamson, Rashid- SRH. I think Rajasthan and Hyderabad are the sides with the strongest 4 overseas players, as in all 4 overseas players being gun players. #SRHvRR,” Sehwag tweeted.
