IPL 2019: When Shardul Thakur apologized to MS Dhoni after fielding goof-up
Shardul didn't have the greatest of days against MI.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), captained by MS Dhoni, lost their first match of Indian Premier League (IPL) yesterday. The Men in Yellow slumped to a defeat by 37 runs against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to hand MI their 100th victory in the T20 tournament. However, CSK had their moments in the match from where they couldn’t get the hosts by the scruff of their necks.
However, some sloppy works in the outfield didn’t help their cause, one of which came from Shardul Thakur. After putting Mumbai to bat first, CSK didn’t allow the home team to run away with the contest. In the eighth over, Mumbai were scoring at a run-a-ball and also lost their openers- Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma. Shardul’s incident took place in the penultimate ball of the eighth over.
Shardul says MS Dhoni ‘sorry’
Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja churned out a short and wide delivery and on strike was the veteran in Yuvraj Singh. The southpaw batsman went on the backfoot and tried to cut the ball away, but couldn’t make a proper connection. The leather went straight to the fielder in the point region and there shouldn’t have been a single. Nevertheless, Shardul, standing there, goofed up.
He couldn’t collect the ball in one go and ended up conceding a single. Yuvraj was aware of the situation didn’t miss out on the chance of taking the run and retaining the strike for the next over. Shardul’s throw was also pretty wayward. Fortunately, there wasn’t any overthrow.
MS Dhoni, the wicketkeeper and CSK’s captain, wasn’t pleased with the effort by any stretch of the imagination. He looked at the fielder in utter disappointment. Later, Shardul was seen folding his hands and apologizing to the legendary cricketer for the lacklustre effort. Overall too, Thakur didn’t have a great day as he ended up conceding 37 runs in his quota of four overs.
