IPL 2019: Yuvraj Singh calls Rishabh Pant the ‘next big thing’ after his 27-ball 78* against MI

Rishabh Pant just lit the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 edition on fire as he smoked 78* off just 27 balls in the Mumbai Indians (MI) clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Delhi lad unleashed an array of strokes on the MI bowling and reached his fifty in just 18 balls, one of the fastest in the league.

His innings helped Delhi Capitals (DC) put up 213 runs on the board. Though buoyed by Yuvraj Singh’s brilliant half-century, MI was nowhere in the chase after losing wickets at regular intervals and their big hitters Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock failing to get going after promising starts.

Rishabh Pant was recently under fire for his below-par performances for the Indian team in ODIs and T20Is. Though he has cracked the code for batting in Tests, where he has two centuries, one each in England and Australia; his limited-overs batting largely remains unsatisfactory.

“I can’t really say about (Pant’s) selection (into India’s World Cup team) but Rishabh was outstanding today. He (Pant) had an outstanding season last year as well. He is playing well in Test matches as well. To score two hundreds overseas at such an age shows his character. It is important that we groom him well and hopefully, he is the next big thing for us,” Yuvraj Singh was quoted saying by The Times of India (TOI).

Yuvraj made a valiant half-century in his debut for Mumbai Indians, which is his sixth franchise in the Indian Premier League. He started with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and had his most productive years with them and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

But fall in performances and fitness issues led to him being unsold in the first round of IPL 2019 auctions. Talking about the same, Yuvraj Singh was quoted saying as “The last two years, have been up and down (for me). And I could not decide on what to do and the main thing was that why I played the game when I started playing the game, I played the game because I enjoyed playing cricket. When I enjoyed playing cricket, I was not playing for India, I was playing for U-16, U-14. So till the time I enjoy playing cricket, I am going to play.”
