Veteran Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh is all set to don the Mumbai Indians jersey in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the years, Yuvraj has played for five IPL franchises and is a renowned veteran of the game. At the IPL 2019 auctions, he went unsold in the first round but was eventually snapped by Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians in the second round for his base price of INR 1 crore.
After bagging Yuvraj’s services, team owner Akash Ambani had remarked that the southpaw has been a real steal deal for the team. Despite all the goodness around, there have been some concerns over how the talismanic all-rounder fits in the scheme of things for an already well-balanced Mumbai Indians setup.
Recently, as per the quotes in NDTV, MI mentor Zaheer Khan expressed his views on the topic. He remarked that the team was looking for an experienced middle-order batter, and Yuvraj Singh is perhaps the best fit for the role. As far as the auctions are concerned, Zaheer feels that going unsold is just one of the dynamics of the process.
“Many players go unsold. I’ve been unsold myself in the first round. Auction dynamics make you do that. Yuvraj Singh has been a boost to the side. We needed an experienced batsman who controls the game in the middle. Who is better than Yuvraj Singh to do this?” quoted Zaheer Khan.
Rohit backs his new recruit too
The Mumbai Indians skipper, Rohit Sharma, is known to share a great bond with Yuvraj Singh off the field. He was elated to have him in his side as well. On the similar lines on which Zaheer Khan opined, Rohit noted that Yuvraj indeed brings a lot of experience to the MI roster, and the camp is happy to have him onboard.
“Yuvraj, as we all know brings a lot of experience to the table. He is a match-winner,” Rohit Sharma had remarked. It will be worth noting whether the management sees Yuvraj as a pure batsman, or would they be bold enough to play him as an all-rounder. Mumbai Indians will start their IPL campaign against the Delhi Capitals on March 24.
