The three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were yet again involved in a painful loss as Rajasthan Royals (RR) registered an easy victory by 7 wickets on Monday, October 19 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Despite featuring in ten fixtures in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the MS Dhoni-led side has failed to find the rhythm and is struggling hard to cover all the loopholes in the squad.
Winning the toss, CSK skipper elected to bat first. However, the batting line-up again looked vulnerable as the Yellow Army posted a below-par total of 125 on the board in 20 overs. After losing their four wickets within 10 overs, CSK was reeling at 56 for four. Though Dhoni and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja tried to rebuild the innings in the middle, there was a clear lack of intent.
While the captain lost his wicket after scoring 28 off 28 in the 18th over, Jadeja remained not out with a knock of 35 off 30 deliveries. Kedar Jadhav again looked out of touch even after coming to bat at 7. For Rajasthan, the pace duo of Jofra Archer and Kartik Tyagi along with spinners Shreyas Gopal and Rahul Tewatia took one wicket each to restrict the opposition.
Buttler shines for RR
Chasing a paltry target of 126, the Royals looked in trouble when they lost their three wickets of Ben Stokes, Robin Uthappa and Sanju Samson within five overs. However, the captain Steve Smith and swashbuckling right-hander Jos Buttler stitched a winning partnership to take the team home. Buttler became the messiah for his team as he played a splendid knock of unbeaten 70 off 48 deliveries including 7 fours and two sixes.
Playing second fiddle to the England batsman, Smith faced only 34 balls and scored 26 runs with two boundaries. The Royals easily finished the game within 18 overs to take fifth spot on the points tally from being the wooden spooners and ensured that they are still there in the competition for making it to the playoffs. On the other hand, the road for CSK in the league is tough now as the chances of them going further in the tournament are significantly very less.
