Table-toppers Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, eyeing supremacy in the league, locked horns at Abu Dhabi in Match 27 of the on-going IPL 2020. It was the battle between two prolific batsmen and skippers– Shreyas Iyer and Rohit Sharma.

But in the end, it was the Mumbai Paltan which who emerged victorious at Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Hunting a 162-run total, MI achieved the target with two balls to spare. They clinched a comprehensive five-wicket victory to go up to the top of the points table.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, DC was jolted with an early blow in the form of Prithvi Shaw. The youngster was sent back to the dugout by Trent Boult which left MI reeling at 4/1. Playing his first match of this season, Ajinkya Rahane was also dismissed on 15 by Krunal Pandya.

But the early setbacks didn’t stop skipper Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan from stitching vital runs on the board. While Dhawan scored 69* off 52 deliveries, Iyer scored a 33-ball 42 to bolster DC’s run-flow. Dhawan stayed in the middle until the end, ensuring that his side posts a daunting total on the board. The Capitals ultimately managed to amass 162 runs on the scoreboard.

Defending champions MI edge closer to the Playoffs

In response, MI also started off with a shaky start after their skipper– Rohit Sharma– was dismissed in the Powerplay. After the captain’s departure, Quinton de Kock stitched a brilliant half-century and increased the possibility of MI winning the contest.

After De Kock’s dismissal, Suryakumar Yadav continued his brilliant form and smashed an impressive half-century. With 6 fours and a six, the right-hander scored 53 off 32 deliveries. He was also assisted by Ishan Kishan’s 15-ball 28. All eyes were on the duo to guide MI to the victory. However, both the batsmen were shown the exit door by Kagiso Rabada.

Birthday boy Hardik Pandya also failed to leave an impact after he departed for a duck. Despite MI losing wickets in quick succession, Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya battled until the end and ensured MI’s triumph. While Krunal gathered 12* off 7, Pollard stitched 14-ball 11. With this win, MI are now sitting on the top of the pile by gathering 10 points in seven matches.
