It was a no-show run chase at Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the afternoon clash on October 31, Saturday as Mumbai Indians (MI) easily defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 9 wickets to cement their place at the top of the points table. With this loss, the team that looked like they would top the table have now lost four consecutive games and their chances of making it to the playoffs are hanging by a thread.
Winning the toss, Kieron Pollard elected to field first. There was yet another collapse of Delhi’s batting line-up as no batsman had an answer to the brilliant balls bowled by the Mumbai bowlers. Capitals’ opening woes continued as the New Zealand pacer named the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw.
While Dhawan bagged a golden duck, Shaw was struggling to middle the balls and thus got out in the third over while playing at 11. Shreyas Iyer and Rishab Pant tried to establish a partnership but they found it difficult to get going as the MI bowlers effectively stemmed the run-flow.
Ishan Kishan’s sensational knock helps MI win the game
The spinner Rahul Chahar got rid of Iyer, who was playing at 25 off 29, in his first over, and after that DC continued to receive hiccups at regular intervals. There were hopes that two power-hitters, Marcus Stoinis and Rishabh Pant will take the team towards a respectable score but in the 12th over, Bumrah took the wicket of both players to script victory for his team.
The defending champions easily restricted DC to a paltry total of 110 at the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Boult and Bumrah were the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai with three wickets each while Nathan Coulter-Nile and Chahar had one each.
Chasing 111 was a cakewalk for Mumbai batting line-up that boasts of players like Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav on their side. Shreyas Iyer left the audience surprised by handing the ball to spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for the very first over of the innings.
It was a good move considering Ashwin gave only 18 runs in his 4 overs, however, he failed to pick any wickets, something that Delhi needed desperately. With such a low total, there was not much for the bowlers to do as Mumbai easily won the match within 15 overs on the back of scintillating 72 unbeaten off 47 deliveries including 8 fours and three sixes by Ishan Kishan. For Delhi, only Anrich Nortje could pick one wicket of Quinton de Kock.
