The league stage of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reached its half-way mark. The mid-table clash in the 28th encounter saw action unfurling between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Sharjah International Stadium. Entering into a much-anticipated game, both the teams had an identical standing in the table with four wins in six games.

Having won the toss, RCB skipper Virat Kohli asked Dinesh Karthik’s men to bowl. The openers – Aaron Finch and Devdutt Padikkal – looked in complete control and took the team to a flying start as they added 47 runs in the Powerplay. However, the 67-run stand was brought to an end by Andre Russell, whose cross-seam delivery disturbed youngster Padikkal’s furniture. In the 12th over, Prasidh Krishna denied Aaron Finch (47 off 37) a well-deserved half-century, who was cleaned up by a perfect yorker from the young pacer.

ABD’s mayhem

Reducing the opponents to 94 for 2, little did the KKR bowlers knew that these two would be the only wickets for them to savor. Finch’s dismissal brought the deadly duo of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in action and soon began the exhibition of running between the wickets. Though the boundaries dried up for the RCB in the next couple of overs, the two cheetahs ran intensely between the wickets to not let the momentum slip away.

Getting his eyes in, ABD’s mayhem began in the 16th over and did not stop until the last over as the ravaging duo added an exact 100 runs for the third wicket. Kohli (33 off 28) seemed content playing the second fiddle to ABD, whose 33-ball 73 hauled the Challengers to a daunting total of 194 for 2.

Sedate start, strangulated middle-order

Coming out to chase the target, KKR went ahead with another new opening pair as debutant Tom Banton joined Shubman Gill in the middle. However, the former was unable to make an impact and his unconvincing knock was brought to an end by seething short of a length delivery by Navdeep Saini. Having added 43 at the loss of one wicket in the Powerplay, Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill (34 from 25) were thrown under the pump. However, trying to steal a greedy single, the former, who was the only batsman looking under control, got himself run out to put his team into further trouble.

In a bid to up the ante, the batsmen displayed a clear plan of bringing the spinners under the line of fire. However, the sheer control of Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal – who gave 32 runs for 3 wickets in their 8 overs combined – strangulated the middle-order to death as Sundar dismissed Nitish Rana and Eoin Morgan, whereas Chahal made Dinesh Karthik edge one onto his stumps. Stuck between the devil and the sea of being unable to break free and the ever-mounting required run rate, KKR’s hopes relied on the big-show Andre Russell.

He did give some hope to his dugout after he smacked a couple of boundaries and a six, although chasing a full and wide delivery of Isuru Udana, Russell mistimed a catch to Mohammad Siraj at extra cover. KKR eventually made a complete mess of the chase and never quite managed to untangle themselves from the web of the spinners. Managing only 112 for 9 in their designated 20 overs, the Riders handed two crucial points and some winning momentum to RCB.
