8th, 6th and 8th – the three positions at which the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finished in the last three IPL seasons. After they finished as the runners-up in 2016, the team has really struggled. They made a few blunders by letting players like KL Rahul and Shane Watson go. Thus, the dependency on the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers has increased.

For several auctions in the past, the RCB management has failed miserably with its choices. A couple of coaches were changed in between. But the auction performance didn’t translate. Even now, under Mike Hesson and Simon Katich, the team has seemed to make some disappointing picks. Just like in the past, these players seem brilliant on paper. It was like this ahead of IPL 2018 as well. However, are these the right picks and will these players be able to deliver?

Here are three disappointing picks made by RCB:

1. Isuru Udana

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had over INR 6 crores left when they finished the auction. They had a few better options at their disposal. But they chose to go ahead with Sri Lanka‘s Isuru Udana. The left-arm pacer has got a fair bit of experience in T20 cricket.

He has played in various T20 leagues around the world. Udana is someone who works around with his variations and thus has managed to find success in the shortest format of the game. While he could be a wicket-taking option, he isn’t one of those economical bowlers RCB needs.

Isuru Udana tends to go for quite a few runs in the death overs. Since he doesn’t bowl at a great pace, his variations are comparatively easy to pick. Moreover, Aaron Finch and AB de Villiers are almost a certainty in the eleven now. Thus, it will be tough for him to make it to the eleven given that RCB has got six other options to choose from.
