The former Australian all-rounder who played for Rajasthan Royals from 2008-2015 led the side during season seven and eight in which the inaugural IPL winners finished fifth and fourth respectively. Watson who has led Australia in all three formats of the game represented Royal Challengers Bangalore for two seasons due to Rajasthan Royals’ IPL suspension.

The 38-year-old has been sensational with the bat ever-since joining Chennai Super Kings in 2018 having amassed 555 runs and 398 runs in seasons eleven and twelve for the three-time winners. The former Sydney Thunder skipper who has also played for Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League is currently plying his trade with Quetta Gladiators in Pakistan Super League.

The two-time IPL Most Valuable Player winner was CSK’s top-performer with the bat in both 2018 (117* off 57 balls) and 2019 IPL finals (80 off 59 balls). Given his IPL experience and all-round credentials, Watson might be yet another apt candidate to lead Chennai Super Kings if MS Dhoni couldn’t make it to the XI due to an injury or some other reasons during 2020 IPL.
