Kolkata Knight Riders mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been shining in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League with his tight bowling and wicket-taking ability. The leggie had a dramatic journey in the world of cricket as after being rejected multiple times in age-group cricket, he took up an architecture degree and then worked as a freelancer. But taking a leap of faith, Varun decided to follow his passion and made a comeback in the sport.

The Tamil Nadu leg-spinner had become an overnight sensation in 2019 auctions when he was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for a staggering amount of INR 8.4 crore. However, he had a forgettable debut edition as he featured in just one fixture and was sidelined for the rest of the tournament due to a finger fracture.

Despite an injury-plagued season, the mystery-spinner got second-time lucky in the 2020 IPL auctions where Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) shelled out INR 4 crore for his seven variations. The 29-year-old has used most of this opportunity by bowling on the dusty and old tracks of UAE.

On Thursday (October 15), the official Twitter handle of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) shared candid pictures from their training sessions. In one such picture, even Varun Chakravarthy was seen giving an animated reaction. Meanwhile, one thing that caught the attention of the netizens was the left arm of Varun where he was seen sporting the tattoo of Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay. The highest-paid actor in Tamil Cinema, Vijay is an actor, dancer, playback singer, and philanthropist.

Varun Chakravarthy’s domestic career

The 29-year-old made his List A debut in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy on September 20, 2018. He had a good start to his career as he became the leading wicket-taker for his side in the tournament with 22 dismissals in nine matches. Then, the mystery-spinner made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy on 12 November 2018.

However, he came in limelight with his performance in the Tamil Nadu Premier League where he played for Madurai Panthers in the 2018 season. His splendid performance resulted in Madurai winning its first title. Varun bowled 40 overs, of which 125 balls were dots. His economy rate of 4.7 was the best among bowlers who had bowled at least 15 overs.
