IPL 2020: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) release 10 players from their squad
KKR has retained Lockie Ferguson, who gave away runs at an economy in excess of 10 last time around.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the 2012 and 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. Ever since the southpaw left, the Men in Gold and Purple have tended to flounder a wee bit. They appointed Dinesh Karthik as their skipper back in 2018 and he has had a tough time. The team has also been marred with a few injury concerns.
Last time around, they couldn’t qualify for the players after finishing with 6 victories from 14 matches. KKR was locked on those many victories along with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as well, but the latter had a superior Net Run Rate. The auction for the upcoming edition is set to take place on December 19 and the Knights have plenty of work to do in order to stage a comeback.
KKR frees Uthappa, Lynn and Brathwaite
The Knights have now released 10 players ahead of the auction. Robin Uthappa was one of their star batters over the last few editions, but his performances kept going downhill. KKR has finally freed him from his services. Chris Lynn has played some scorching knocks for the franchise, but has been prone to injuries as well. In the last season, he wasn’t at his very best, though he got the runs.
Carlos Brathwaite, who was roped in at crores, has been let go off as well. In the limited chances he got, Ricky strained in all the departments. KKR already has Andre Russell, who has been a fulcrum of the franchise, especially in the last couple of editions. The franchise has also bid adieu to leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who has been a consistent performer for them after moving from the KXIP.
Among other names, who are released are Joe Denly, pacer Yarra Prithviraj, Nikhil Naik, KC Cariappa, Aussie pacer Matthew Kelly and Shrikant Mundhe. Among them only Mundhe and Kelly ended up warming the bench in the all the encounters. Lockie Ferguson was expensive last season without much success, but his success at the international level meant that KKR didn’t release him.
