The 28th match of the Indian Premier League went live from Sharjah between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. Choosing to bat first, RCB remained stunning in every bit of their batting and won the contest by a huge margin of 82 runs. They posted a big total of 194/2 on the board, and all the batters that walked up the pitch contributed well to the team’s score. AB de Villiers was phenomenal and played a knock of 73* off 33 to get RCB going.

AB de Villiers was named as the player of the match for his thunderous batting show. Aaron Finch added an essential 47 off 37 from his end, and cameos by Devdutt Padikkal (32 off 33), and Virat Kohli (33* off 28) remained significant. Varun Chakravarthy did a fine job with the ball as he conceded just 25 runs in his spell. Prasidh Krishna and Andre Russell picked one wicket each for KKR.

RCB’s Bowling dominated the show

Hunting down the hefty target, the entire batting order crumbled under pressure and left for the pavilion in no time. Shubman Gill’s 34 off 25 was the only significant contribution to the team’s score while chasing in the game. Chris Morris and Yuzvendra Chahal stunned batsmen during their dangerous spells.

Losing Skipper, Dinesh Karthik said

He (De Villiers) is a world-class player and hard to stop him on a ground like this and at the end of the day his innings was the difference between both sides. We need to sit down and make sure there are new things we need to do better. Batting is one area we didn’t do well today and that’s something we gonna try and improve. We have three days break and we need to start fresh after that. It’s been an interesting IPL so far as a lot of teams are comfortable batting first. I think every captain has a day like this where everything doesn’t go according to plan and it’s one of those days for me, I don’t want to read too much into it.

Winning Skipper, Virat Kohli said

They’ve played good cricket in this IPL. Coming here, it was important to get the right start. Great to see individuals step up when the team requies. Bowling unit, with Morris coming in, looks all the more potent. Very happy. At the toss the pitch didn’t have the usual Sharjah sheen. Knew the wicket was going to get slower and slower. Barring one super-human, everyone struggled on that pitch. Talk was around 165-170.

Preparation was really good. Three week camp helped us. Have clarity of plans. Know exactly what we want to do on the field. All depends on the mindset. It’s very positive. If your bowling unit is strong, you have a great chance of going deep in the tournament. Was unbelievable. I thought I had a few balls under my belt so I’ll start striking. But he came in and hit his third ball nicely. On a pitch like that, only AB can do that. It was a special knock. We got 195 purely because of the genius of that man. Always things you can reflect on and say you can improve on these things. All about taking this momentum forward. Don’t want to be complacent.

Player of the match, AB de Villiers said

Very happy with the performance. Got a duck in the last game, a terrible feeling. Very happy that I contributed. Surprised myself out there tonight. Knew the wicket was quite tough to bat on. But I thought 145-150 wasn’t enough. So I looked to go further, and was surprised to get 195. They’ve got a really good bowling attack. The margins are small and you have to use every bit of energy. As Virat said there was a light in my eye, felt it in the bus itself. Always enjoyed takng the gloves. Very excited about it, I must say. I do bounce off ideas with Virat. As a keeper you have a really good view of the pace of the game. Different skills completely. It depends. Have worked really hard with the gloves. Want to be the best I could, that’s always been my attitude.
