Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), after a disappointing outing in 2019, made a tremendous start to the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team, led by Virat Kohli, defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Both teams fought tooth and nail and the game was a witness to a number of ups and down, keeping the fans on their toes. After electing to field first, the Sunrisers restricted RCB to 163 for five. The Orange Army made a comeback after the Challengers’ openers got the team off to a flying start.
During the run-chase, SRH were in command when Jonny Bairstow was there in the middle. However, once the Englishman was dismissed, David Warner and Co lost wickets in heaps and were bowled out for 153 in 20 overs.
Here are the RCB Player Ratings for the match: –
Devdutt Padikkal- 9/10
Devdutt Padikkal played a gem of a knock after featuring in his first game for the Challengers in the IPL. He churned out 56 off 42 balls with the help of four fours. It was eventually Vijay Shankar, who castled him. It was his 90-run partnership with Aaron Finch that laid the platform for his team.
Aaron Finch- 7.5/10
Aaron Finch, also making his debut for RCB, played the sheet-anchor’s role in his opening stand with Padikkal. The right-handed opening batsman got 29 runs off 27 balls with one four and two sixes. The Australian cricketer got out in the 12th over when Abhishek Sharma trapped him plumb in front.
Virat Kohli- 6.5/10
Virat Kohli didn’t have the greatest day with the bat in hand. He started in a cautious manner, scoring 14 without hitting a single four. Just when he tried to slog T Natarajan, he was caught by Rashid Khan at deep mid-wicket. However, Kohli shone as the skipper, leading from the front.
AB de Villiers- 9.5/10
AB de Villiers came to bat after Finch’s dismissal and had a massive task at hand. Like Virat, even he started slow, but once he got his eyes in, there was no stopping him. He injected impetus into the Challengers’ innings with a 30-ball 51. His knock was laced with four fours and a couple of sixes.
Shivam Dube- 8.5/10
Shivam Dube couldn’t perform with the bat, getting run out for seven. However, he, well and truly, made amends with the ball in hand. He got rid of Priyam Garg and an injured Mitchell Marsh. Moreover, under pressure, he gave away only 15 runs in his three overs at an economy of five.
Josh Philippe- 4/10
Josh Phillipe didn’t have much to do in the game. The Sydney Sixers star didn’t get a chance to bat on his IPL debut. But he showed his prowess with the keeping gloves in hand. He was responsible in running out Abhishek Sharma after the latter was involved in a nasty collision with Rashid Khan.
Washington Sundar- 5/10
Washington Sundar bowled only a solitary over in the game and conceded only seven overs. In that over, he conceded a six, but made sure that he also bowled four dot balls. Going ahead into the tournament, the youngster can, well and truly, be a handy prospect, both with the willow and ball.
Umesh Yadav- 2.5/10
Umesh Yadav had a forgettable day with the ball in hand. He was RCB’s most expensive bowler by a country mile, conceding 48 runs in four overs. He was hit for six fours and two sixes. Nevertheless, he ran out David Warner at the non-striker’s end following a strong shot from Jonny Bairstow.
Navdeep Saini- 9/10
Navdeep Saini was exceptional for RCB, ruffling the batters with pace and venom. In his four overs, he gave away only 25 runs with nine dot balls. In the 18th over of the game when the match could have gone either ways, he dismissed Rashid and Bhuvneshwar Kumar with a couple of peaches.
Dale Steyn- 7/10
Dale Steyn had a reasonable day with the leather in hand. In his 3.4 overs, the South African fast bowler gave away 33 runs at an economy of nine. In his last over, Steyn got rid of Sandeep Sharma and closed out the match as well. He would be looking to up his performance in the next game.
Yuzvendra Chahal- 9.5/10
Yuzvendra Chahal was RCB’s standout bowler without a shred of a doubt. He started with Manish Pandey’s wicket after which he pinned Jonny Bairstow, who scored 61. Thereafter, the leg-spinner nipped out Vijay Shankar with a vicious wrong urn. In four overs, Chahal gave away only 18 runs.
