Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are finally playing like the way they are expected to. The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season has been a forgettable one for them but the team is playing the role of party-spoilers at the back end. Kolkata Knight Riders were at the receiving end of it. After invited KKR to bat first, CSK ended up conceding 172 runs in 20 overs due to Nitish Rana’s splendid 87 off 61.
In response, Shane Watson got out early but the youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad played a brilliant game for the second game running. Ambati Rayudu also played a handy knock while Ravindra Jadeja came out and finished the game in a stunning way to leave KKR out of ideas. It was in Lockie Ferguson’s 19th over that the game changed and Jadeja was at the helm scoring crucial sixes for the team as CSK registered their 5th win of the season.
Here are the CSK Player Ratings for the CSK vs KKR match:
1. Ruturaj Gaikwad – 9/10
Ruturaj Gaikwad had impressed everyone with his half-century in the previous game. Even in this game, he batted beautifully. Opening the innings with Watson, he took charge in the powerplay and continued to play some crisp shots. His timing and placement of the ball left the spectators in awe and Gaikwad ended up scoring 72 off just 53 balls. Though he got out at the wrong time, Gaikwad had done enough for CSK to get over the line.
2. Shane Watson – 5/10
Shane Watson has struggled almost throughout the season. After missing a couple of games, he was included once again in the line-up at the expense of Faf du Plessis. He played second fiddle to Gaikwad in the 50-run opening stand but crawled to 14 off 19 balls before throwing his wicket away to Varun Chakravarthy.
3. Ambati Rayudu – 8/10
After Watson’s wicket, Rayudu came out to bat and was amongst runs almost immediately. He added a crucial 68-run stand with Gaikwad for the second wicket. Rather Rayudu’s aggressive batting took pressure off the CSK opener at the other end. The Hyderabad batsman ended up scoring 38 runs off just 20 balls with five fours and a six.
4. MS Dhoni – 5/10
MS Dhoni has struggled completely with the bat this year. Chakravarthy once again castled him at a crucial stage of the innings for 1 run. However, he gets a couple of ratings for his captaincy which was spot on in this game.
5. Sam Curran – 6/10
Sam Curran has been a find of the season for CSK. He bowled well conceding only 21 runs in three overs and was unlucky not to get a wicket. However, the southpaw couldn’t middle the ball with the bat in this game. He could muster only 13 off 14 deliveries when the required run-rate was almost 12.
6. Ravindra Jadeja – 9/10
Ravindra Jadeja had a perfect all-round day in the middle. He first bowled three overs for just 20 runs and picked up a wicket of Rinku Singh apart from taking a catch to send back Sunil Narine. Then with the bat, Jaddu – the finisher – was at the helm. He smacked an unbeaten 31 off 11 balls with two fours and three sixes to take CSK over the line in style.
7. N Jagadeesan – NA
It was that sort of a day for Jagadeesan when he didn’t have to do anything. He didn’t get batting and even ball went only a few times to him in the field.
8. Mitchell Santner – 6.5/10
Mitchell Santner made it to the CSK playing XI very late this season. But he has done a fair job so far. Even in this game, he picked a crucial wicket of Sunil Narine and conceded 30 runs in three overs.
9. Deepak Chahar – 5/10
Deepak Chahar didn’t have a great day on the field. He was too short with the new ball when it was swinging and couldn’t get the early breakthrough for the team. Chahar was expensive as well and went for 31 runs in his three overs.
10. Karn Sharma – 6/10
Karn Sharma was the one who got the Men in Yellow their first breakthrough castling Shubman Gill. He broke a threatening opening stand but went for a lot of runs in his four-over spell as well. Karn conceding 35 runs in his four overs.
11. Lungi Ngidi – 7.5/10
Lungi Ngidi played the first two matches for CSK and was unfortunately benched since then. He finally made an appearance in this game and the man proved his worth. He picked important wickets of Rana and Morgan in the death overs keeping a lid of KKR’s run-scoring.
