IPL 2020: Mike Hussey among shortlisted candidates for Kings XI Punjab's head coach role
Among the shortlisted candidates, Hussey is definitely the most experienced with IPL.
It has been over a decade but Kings XI Punjab are yet to lay their hands on the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy. In fact, the Kings XI are one of the worst-performing teams in the 12-year journey of the tournament. They are one of the only three teams who are yet to win the IPL. Kings XI Punjab’s best run came in 2014 when they made it to the final where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
They have been trying desperately to change their fortunes but have not tasted success yet. From buying big names like R Ashwin, KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, and others to roping in star coach Mike Hesson, they did all they could but nothing has worked out so far. Kings XI Punjab have now set their sight on former Australia batsman Mike Hussey.
According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, the Punjab-based outfit has shortlisted the legendary batsman for the head coach’s post. Along with Hussey, Kings XI Punjab have also shortlisted ex-Australia coach Darren Lehmann, their former captain George Bailey and former England coach Andy Flower. The IPL franchise is currently looking for a head coach after their former coach Hesson parted ways with them last month.
Candidates’ credentials
Among the shortlisted candidates, Hussey is definitely the most experienced with IPL. He was an important member of the Chennai Super Kings between 2008 and 2011. In 2010, he helped the team win its first IPL title and the now-scrapped Champions League T20. In 2018, Chennai Super Kings once again roped in Hussey but as a batting coach. It would be interesting to see whether Hussey ends his association with the Super Kings to bag the lucrative job of a head coach.
Bailey would be a good option too. The former Australia captain led Kings XI to the final in 2014 and can change the team’s fortunes once again. Having played for the franchise, Bailey is well aware of the team’s culture. Lehmann, on the other hand, has experience with the Kings XI too, having coached the team in 2013. He had also coached Deccan Chargers to the IPL title in 2009. Flower has also done a decent job with England and would be a strong contender for the post.
