The defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) were involved in a nail-biting encounter with wooden-spooners Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on October 18 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In what was Mumbai’s second Super Over clash in their nine fixtures in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, the franchise again lost the game at the fag end of the second Super Over.

Batting first, despite having a rocky start, Mumbai managed to garner 176 runs owing to the fine innings of 53 off 43 deliveries by wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock. The all-rounder Kieron Pollard and pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile also played significant cameos by playing quickfire knocks of 34 off 12 and 24 off 12 balls respectively. The pace duo of Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh emerged as highest wicket-takers Kings by taking two wickets each while Chris Jordan and Ravi Bishnoi had one each to their name.

Following this par target of 177 runs, KXIP lost their first wicket in the form of Mayank Agarwal quite early. Though KL Rahul and Chris Gayle tried to stitch a partnership in the middle, Gayle went back to the pavilion after scoring 24 off 21 deliveries and was soon followed by Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell. However, Rahul soon found an ally in Deepak Hooda and the two together took the team to 153/4 in 17 overs.

Rohit Sharma caught swearing on the match field

At the end, Punjab had to score 9 runs off the last 6 balls with in-form Deepak Hooda and Chris Jordan on the crease. Mumbai had almost lost the match as the batting duo collected 6 runs off the first three deliveries. However, the pacer Trent Boult managed to defend two runs off the last three balls. On the final ball, Jordan was run-out while trying to complete the second run and the match went into Super Over.

Nonetheless, the Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma couldn’t contain his excitement on seeing the brilliant bowling by Boult and ended up using a swear word. In a viral video, Rohit can be seen saying: “Beh*****d”, in an animated manner.

The match was ultimately won by Kings XI Punjab as after the first Super Over resulted in a draw, the team could easily chase 12 runs in the second Super Over to register their third victory of the 2020 edition. With 6 points, KXIP climbed the points tally from the last position to sixth place.
