The Delhi Capitals are in serious trouble in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2020). They had taken off to a flying start and were expected to finish at the top of the points table but four consecutive painful defeats have left their playoffs chances hanging by a thread.

Having won five out of the first seven games, qualification looked like a cakewalk for the Capitals, however, they have made things complicated for themselves by registering victories in just two out of 6 fixtures in the second half of the T20 extravaganza.

The biggest disappointment for the Delhi-based franchise has been their star-studded batting line-up in the second half. Despite boasting of players like captain Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, and power-hitters Marcus Stoinis, Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer on their side, DC has failed to impress with the willow. The batsmen seem conservative in their approach and have gifted their wickets easily to the opposition with poor shot selection.

On Saturday, October 31, Delhi was up against Mumbai Indians (MI) in an important afternoon clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Having won the toss, Kieron Pollard elected to field. Batting first, the opening woes for DC continued as Dhawan bagged a duck while Prithvi lost his wicket in the third over after showing urgency in hitting big shots.

The rest of the team had also looked ordinary with them posting a total of 110 on the board at the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Captain Iyer was the highest scorer for DC with 25 off 29 while Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah were the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai with three wickets each.

Prithvi Shawn’s bad run with the bat continues

Delhi’s opening batsman Prithvi Shaw is struggling with the bad form with the willow. In 11 innings, he has scored only 219 runs including two ducks. Owing to his bad form, the 20-year-old was dropped from the playing XI for two matches and made a comeback in the game against Mumbai but another failure was in line as he could score only 10 runs against MI. Shaw was dismissed when he tried to slog Trent Boult across the line only for a top edge to be caught by the keeper.

Seeing the struggle of the youngster, the former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar took to his official Twitter handle to give batting advice to Shaw. Manjrekar wrote that Shaw should idolize the explosive Indian opener Virender Sehwag and should not attempt shots that he isn’t confident about.

Manjrekar tweeted: “Dear Prithvi Shaw, try & not attempt impossible shots, simply because they are impossible to pull off. Keep Virender Sehwag as your role model, see how he only stuck to shots he had the ability/confidence to pull off.”
