Experience has always been a key factor in the view of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises for winning the title. However, it is not that the team with the most experience has been successful every time but such teams do earn an edge.

A team with a proper mixture of experience and youth will be the best to go along in the T20 format. A total of 186 players have spread across the eight teams in the IPL 2020 ahead of which all those 186 players have got a collective experience of more than 20000 T20s.

Here we look at the experience in the Twenty20 format of each squad ahead of the IPL 2020:

8. Kolkata Knight Riders – 2087 matches

Kolkata Knight Riders have got the likes of Andre Russell (330 T20s), Sunil Narine (341 T20s), Eoin Morgan (290 T20s) and Dinesh Karthik (288 T20) in their squad. The four players collectively account for 1249 appearances in the T20 format but the KKR team remains as the least experienced T20 squad among the eight teams.

The major reason for it is none of the remaining 18 players in the KKR squad have completed 100 T20 matches. Kamlesh Nagarkot is yet to make his T20 debut while the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy made his T20 debut last year in the IPL only and hasn’t played any other T20. Their squad generates a total of 2087 T20 appearances; more than 150 T20s fewest than the next on the list.

Delhi Capitals has quite a few players not much experienced at the T20 format. Unlike the other franchises, Delhi doesn’t have any overseas players with experience of playing for a decade or more. Marcus Stoinis, with 117 T20 appearances, is the most experienced overseas player for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2020.

The 22 players present in the DC squad have featured in a total of 2260 T20 matches which makes them the 2nd least experienced squad of the 13th edition of IPL. Talking about the experience, Delhi does have the likes of Shikhar Dhawan (259), Ravi Ashwin (232) and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/poll-38-of-fans-feel-amit-mishra-can-still-make-a-comeback-to-team-india/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amit Mishra</a> (229) with 200+ T20 matches in their career and Ajinkya Rahane (196) soon to join them.

Mishra and Ashwin have picked up 253 and 235 wickets respectively in their T20 careers which stands out as 1st and 3rd highest wicket-takers among Indians in T20 cricket. Delhi franchise doesn’t have noteworthy batsmen with long experience other than Shikhar Dhawan (7294) who is the only player with 5000+ T20 runs in their squad.

The Rajasthan Royals have got the 3rd least experienced squad going into the IPL 2020 in terms of T20 matches played. Their 25-man squad has collectively made only 2341 T20 appearances due to the presence of youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kartik Tyagi, the players of India’s U19 CWC 2020 team are yet to make their debut in the T20 format.

Even the left-arm pacer Aakash Singh who was part of this year’s U19 CWC has featured in only one T20 match thus far. David Miller is the most experienced T20 cricketer in the RR squad with a total of 314 appearances to his name in this format. Rajasthan Royals’ squad aggregate of 36684 runs is the 3rd fewest but the 1171 wickets they picked are the lowest among the eight teams ahead of the tournament. Royals don’t even have one player who has picked up 200 wickets in his T20 career. Andrew Tye’s 194 wickets are the most among their squad players and Jaydev Unadkat’s 168 wickets being the most by an Indian among RR squad.

Kings XI Punjab has the got the 4th least T20 experienced squad among the eight teams ahead of the IPL 2020. Their squad accounts for a grand total of 2535 appearances in the Twenty20 format despite having full 25 players. One of the main reasons behind it is young domestic Indian cricketers being part of the Kings XI squad.

Seven of the 25 players in the KXIP squad have featured in less than 25 Twenty20 matches thus far. The Universe Boss, Chris Gayle is the most experienced player in the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2020-jonty-rhodes-takes-a-one-handed-stunner-during-kings-xi-punjabs-training-session/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Punjab </a>franchise having played 404 T20 matches thus far. Interestingly, no Indian player in their line-up has played in at least 200 T20s which is quite rare in this tournament.

Mandeep Singh’s 165 T20 appearances are the most among the Indian players of KXIP team. The KXIP team players have accounted for 42368 runs in the T20 format out of which more than 30 per cent came through Gayle who amassed 13296 runs. KXIP squad’s 33 T20 tons are the most for any team thanks to Gayle’s 22 hundreds which are two more than any other team’s tally.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have not had big experienced units in the previous editions but this time, their squad of 25 players have collectively featured in 2671 Twenty20 matches ahead of the tournament. SRH squad’s tally of T20 appearances is the 4th highest among the eight franchises before IPL 2020. Their skipper David Warner is the most experienced player with 282 appearances.

The least experienced players in the SRH squad are young dashing batsman Abdul Samad and India’s captain of 2020 U19 CWC, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/im-looking-forward-to-more-opportunities-priyam-garg-says-breaking-into-the-senior-side-is-his-ultimate-goal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Priyam Garg</a> who have featured in only 11 T20 games apiece. A total of seven players have featured in 170 and more T20 matches which include four players with at least 200 T20 matches apiece.

Both the Afghanistan players, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi are among those four having played 221 and 270 T20 matches apiece. Manish Pandey is the only SRH player with the experience of playing 200+ T20 games as the Karnataka batsman featured in 240 T20s thus far. The SRH squad has collectively accounted for 40000 runs and 1484 wickets in T20 cricket.

3. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 2783 matches:

Irrespective of how closer the Royal Challengers Bangalore have come to winning the IPL title, they have always gotten an experienced squad going into the tournament. This time it is no different for them as the 21 players in their squad have accounted for 2783 appearances in the Twenty20 format; the 3rd most for a franchise ahead of the 2020 IPL.

AB de Villiers, with 310 T20s, is the only player in the RCB squad with an experience of over 300 T20 matches. However, the likes of Virat Kohli and Aaron Finch have featured in 281 and 287 T20 matches respectively. Parthiv Patel and Chris Morris also contribute over 200 T20 matches to this RCB squad while <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/mike-hesson-watches-devdutt-padikkal-destroy-haryana-in-the-semi-final-of-syed-mushtaq-ali-trophy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Devdutt Padikkal </a>being the youngest with 12 T20 games.

This time RCB has got a pretty experienced bowling line-up as a total of 1618 wickets have been collectively picked by their players in T20s which are the 2nd most among the eight squads. A total of 43326 runs have been aggregated by the RCB players in the T20 format and collectively struck 20 hundreds which include eight of them by Finch.

Defending champions, Mumbai Indians have got the 2nd best Twenty20 format experience among the 2020 IPL squads. A total of 2894 matches have been played by the players who are part of the 4-time IPL winning team. MI’s tally could have crossed 3000 if not for Lasith Malinga’s pulling out of the tournament owing personal issues.

Kieron Pollard is present in the MI squad who is the only player to have featured in over 500 T20 matches. The current Mumbai franchise squad players have collected 45637 runs which are also the 2nd most by any team’s squad. The majority of those runs came through the bat of Pollard and skipper <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2020-rohit-sharma-confirms-opening-the-innings-this-season-but-ready-to-keep-other-options-open/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Rohit Sharma </a>who amassed 10207 and 8642 respectively.

The 22 players present in the DC squad have featured in a total of 2260 T20 matches which makes them the 2nd least experienced squad of the 13th edition of IPL. Talking about the experience, Delhi does have the likes of Shikhar Dhawan (259), Ravi Ashwin (232) and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/poll-38-of-fans-feel-amit-mishra-can-still-make-a-comeback-to-team-india/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amit Mishra</a> (229) with 200+ T20 matches in their career and Ajinkya Rahane (196) soon to join them.
Mishra and Ashwin have picked up 253 and 235 wickets respectively in their T20 careers which stands out as 1st and 3rd highest wicket-takers among Indians in T20 cricket. Delhi franchise doesn’t have noteworthy batsmen with long experience other than Shikhar Dhawan (7294) who is the only player with 5000+ T20 runs in their squad.

The Rajasthan Royals have got the 3rd least experienced squad going into the IPL 2020 in terms of T20 matches played. Their 25-man squad has collectively made only 2341 T20 appearances due to the presence of youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kartik Tyagi, the players of India’s U19 CWC 2020 team are yet to make their debut in the T20 format.
Even the left-arm pacer Aakash Singh who was part of this year’s U19 CWC has featured in only one T20 match thus far. David Miller is the most experienced T20 cricketer in the RR squad with a total of 314 appearances to his name in this format. Robin Uthappa and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/opening-is-is-my-favourite-position-to-bat-in-t20-cricket-jos-buttler-after-his-performance-against-australia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Jos Buttler </a>come next having played 256 and 254 matches respectively.
Rajasthan Royals’ squad aggregate of 36684 runs is the 3rd fewest but the 1171 wickets they picked are the lowest among the eight teams ahead of the tournament. Royals don’t even have one player who has picked up 200 wickets in his T20 career. Andrew Tye’s 194 wickets are the most among their squad players and Jaydev Unadkat’s 168 wickets being the most by an Indian among RR squad.

<h3>5. Kings XI Punjab – 2535 matches:</h3>

Kings XI Punjab has the got the 4th least T20 experienced squad among the eight teams ahead of the IPL 2020. Their squad accounts for a grand total of 2535 appearances in the Twenty20 format despite having full 25 players. One of the main reasons behind it is young domestic Indian cricketers being part of the Kings XI squad.
Seven of the 25 players in the KXIP squad have featured in less than 25 Twenty20 matches thus far. The Universe Boss, Chris Gayle is the most experienced player in the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2020-jonty-rhodes-takes-a-one-handed-stunner-during-kings-xi-punjabs-training-session/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Punjab </a>franchise having played 404 T20 matches thus far. Interestingly, no Indian player in their line-up has played in at least 200 T20s which is quite rare in this tournament.
Mandeep Singh’s 165 T20 appearances are the most among the Indian players of KXIP team. The KXIP team players have accounted for 42368 runs in the T20 format out of which more than 30 per cent came through Gayle who amassed 13296 runs. KXIP squad’s 33 T20 tons are the most for any team thanks to Gayle’s 22 hundreds which are two more than any other team’s tally.

<h3>4. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 2671 matches:</h3>

The Sunrisers Hyderabad have not had big experienced units in the previous editions but this time, their squad of 25 players have collectively featured in 2671 Twenty20 matches ahead of the tournament. SRH squad’s tally of T20 appearances is the 4th highest among the eight franchises before IPL 2020. Their skipper David Warner is the most experienced player with 282 appearances.
The least experienced players in the SRH squad are young dashing batsman Abdul Samad and India’s captain of 2020 U19 CWC, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/im-looking-forward-to-more-opportunities-priyam-garg-says-breaking-into-the-senior-side-is-his-ultimate-goal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Priyam Garg</a> who have featured in only 11 T20 games apiece. A total of seven players have featured in 170 and more T20 matches which include four players with at least 200 T20 matches apiece.
Both the Afghanistan players, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi are among those four having played 221 and 270 T20 matches apiece. Manish Pandey is the only SRH player with the experience of playing 200+ T20 games as the Karnataka batsman featured in 240 T20s thus far. The SRH squad has collectively accounted for 40000 runs and 1484 wickets in T20 cricket.

<h3>3. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 2783 matches:</h3>

Irrespective of how closer the Royal Challengers Bangalore have come to winning the IPL title, they have always gotten an experienced squad going into the tournament. This time it is no different for them as the 21 players in their squad have accounted for 2783 appearances in the Twenty20 format; the 3rd most for a franchise ahead of the 2020 IPL.
AB de Villiers, with 310 T20s, is the only player in the RCB squad with an experience of over 300 T20 matches. However, the likes of Virat Kohli and Aaron Finch have featured in 281 and 287 T20 matches respectively. Parthiv Patel and Chris Morris also contribute over 200 T20 matches to this RCB squad while <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/mike-hesson-watches-devdutt-padikkal-destroy-haryana-in-the-semi-final-of-syed-mushtaq-ali-trophy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Devdutt Padikkal </a>being the youngest with 12 T20 games.
This time RCB has got a pretty experienced bowling line-up as a total of 1618 wickets have been collectively picked by their players in T20s which are the 2nd most among the eight squads. A total of 43326 runs have been aggregated by the RCB players in the T20 format and collectively struck 20 hundreds which include eight of them by Finch.

<h3>2. Mumbai Indians – 2894 matches:</h3>

Defending champions, Mumbai Indians have got the 2nd best Twenty20 format experience among the 2020 IPL squads. A total of 2894 matches have been played by the players who are part of the 4-time IPL winning team. MI’s tally could have crossed 3000 if not for Lasith Malinga’s pulling out of the tournament owing personal issues.
Kieron Pollard is present in the MI squad who is the only player to have featured in over 500 T20 matches. The current Mumbai franchise squad players have collected 45637 runs which are also the 2nd most by any team’s squad. The majority of those runs came through the bat of Pollard and skipper <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2020-rohit-sharma-confirms-opening-the-innings-this-season-but-ready-to-keep-other-options-open/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Rohit Sharma </a>who amassed 10207 and 8642 respectively.
Their players have collectively smashed 2209 sixes which are the 2nd only to Kings XI Punjab’s tally of 2221. Among the 24 players present in the squad of Mumbai Indians, only one guy has not featured in a T20 match thus far. Leg-spinner Prince Balwant Rai Singh has got the experience of playing at age level cricket for Punjab but is yet to make his professional debut.

It won’t be a surprise for anyone to find Chennai Super Kings having the most experienced squad among the eight teams for the IPL 2020. The presence of <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/it-was-sakshi-dhonis-idea-to-name-it-helicopter-dwayne-bravo-opens-up-on-his-ms-dhoni-song/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dwayne Bravo</a> has lifted their tally to 3287 matches; the only side with a squad experience of 3000+ T20s. The Super Kings are missing the experience of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh who collectively played over 550 Twenty20 games.
Raina has aggregated close to 9000 runs in this format including over 5000 runs for CSK only while Harbhajan has 235 wickets in T20s including 150 of them in IPL itself. However, CSK has already got the tournament’s oldest player Imran Tahir who has taken over 300 wickets and the oldest Indian of the IPL 2020, MS Dhoni who featured in more than 300 T20s.
The Chennai Super Kings also have the squad with the highest experience in scoring runs and taking wickets in Twenty20 format ahead of IPL 2020 with 46394 runs and 2213 wickets respectively. The presence of MS Dhoni did help CSK in having an edge in the most number of catches and stumpings in T20s among the eight franchises.
