Basil Thampi belongs to the group of cricketers from the south who ended up playing the sport while they had decided to opt for another job. However, Thampi managed to impress everyone with his ability to generate speed during the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. He managed to consistently bowl over 140 kmph during that time and hence he grabbed the attention of the selectors. Later on, he was picked for 85 lakh rupees by the Gujarat Lions.

During that season, he picked up 11 wickets and was awarded the emerging player trophy. After a fresh auction in 2018, he was picked up by the Sunrisers. But, unfortunately, he performed poorly and now he holds the record of the worst bowling figures by an Indian in a T20 game. In a game against RCB, Thampi conceded 70 runs off his four overs.

Later on, in 2019, he bowled at an economy rate of 9,16 which is not satisfactory by any means. Adding on, in 2020, he conceded 46 runs in the single game he played. This is much worse than the previous edition as he conceded runs with an economy rate of 11.50. With an already strong bowling lineup, Thampi might be benched for most of the season.
