IPL 2021: 5 overseas players SRH may look out for in the auction

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a pretty decent IPL season last year, finishing at the 3rd position. They were doubted by many at the start due to their inexperienced middle order, new pacers like Natrajan coming in, and overdependence on their foreign batsmen. They were also pegged down by injuries to their premier bowler Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and key allrounder Mitchell Marsh. Despite all of these, they played really well, backed their strengths, and qualified for the playoffs leaving many teams behind. This year, they seem to be one of the most settled squads going into the season, releasing just 5 players and retaining the entire core of the team. In total, they have only 3 empty slots, out of which only one will be filled by an overseas player. Since they have only one foreign spot to look out for, it will both be critical and interesting to see, who they go after. Here are 5 players SRH can look out for in the IPL auction: 1. Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell. (Photo Source: Twitter) Maxwell had a very dull IPL season last time around. He scored only 108 runs not hitting a single 6 in the season. This is very unlikely of someone carrying the stature Maxwell has. But after Maxwell’s exploits over the years, it is still likely that he will be sold in the auction at a very decent price. After the flop season of 2020, he did have an awesome India series followed by a booming BBL. It is only a matter of time that he can get back to form even in the IPL. As far as SRH is concerned, their batting looks too dependent on David Warner and either Jonny Bairstow or Kane Williamson. The rest of the batting order is quite inexperienced and getting Maxwell will be a huge boost. He can finish off the innings very well if the middle order fails. The Victorian even bat up the order. Apart from his batting, he is a gun fielder and can also provide a couple of overs as an extra bowler on Indian pitches. 2. Moeen Ali Moeen Ali. (Photo: IANS) Moeen Ali was a part of RCB for last the 2 seasons before being released by them. He had a decent season in 2019 but could play very few games last season. He can be a good choice for Hyderabad. A dependable middle-order batsman and a spinner bowling 4 overs are more than one could ask for. They played with a fast-bowling all-rounder through the 2020 season in UAE but could look to play another spinner this time around. He can provide much-needed stability to the middle order. He can be the perfect replacement for Mohammad Nabi. SRH can surely target him at a reasonable auction price than someone like Shakib, who will have a heavier price. 3. Shakib Al Hasan Shakib al Hasan. (Photo Source: Kuntal Chakrabarty/IANS) One of the best all-rounders in the history of the IPL, Bangladesh’s Shakib is back after serving 1 year of the ban following his contact with a bookie. The team he last played for was SRH and he is now back in the auction. Shakib’s IPL statistics speak for themselves. He has scored runs at an average of above 21 and a strike rate touching 127. He also has 59 wickets in a total experience of 63 IPL games. He can replace a fast-bowling allrounder in the 11 with the IPL taking place in India. He can also bat up the order and provide stability in the middle order. He is a wonderful bowler and can form a lethal pair with Rashid Khan, giving crucial breakthroughs. With the job he has done for SRH in the past, they will look to get him back. 4. Jhye Richardson Jhye Richardson. (Photo by Paul Kane/Getty Images) The fast bowler was in wonderful form this BBL season, picking a total of 27 wickets in 15 matches. He has not been a part of the IPL till now, but it seems like this might be his first year in the mega event. He will be on the radar of many teams and SRH might be one of them. They have released a fast bowler in Billy Stanlake, which leaves a spot vacant. Richardson can be a good choice there. He bowls at a decent pace and his variations like cutters and slower balls make him a complete T20 bowler. If SRH find a way to sort their batting out with Indian options only, they can definitely look to include Jhye Richardson in their scheme of things to strengthen their already good-looking bowling attack. 5. Kyle Jamieson Kyle Jamieson. (Photo Source: Twitter) The young New Zealand all-rounder has been in the news since his debut. He has been exceptional in his short international career. Standing tall at 6ft 6 inches, who can bowl consistently beyond 140 kms, an excellent fielder, and a handy lower-order batsman, Kyle Jamieson can really start a bidding war in the auction. Mitchell Marsh was injured in the very first match of IPL 2020. SRH did find a good replacement in Jason Holder, but if either of them is injured they do not have any other good all-round options. Though SRH look like a complete squad, securing someone like Jamieson can really set their squad up for many coming seasons.
