Hero of Kolkata Knight Riders’ back-to-back victories in the UAE leg, Venkatesh Iyer couldn’t make a significant mark against Chennai Super Kings. The left-handed batsman started off well and even played some delightful shots in the powerplay overs. However, Shardul Thakur struck with the very first ball of his spell and sent the dashing opener back. In total, Iyer scored 18 off 15 deliveries.
Speaking of the youngster’s dismissal, the right-arm pacer fired the delivery outside the off-stump. Iyer’s eyes lit up seeing the width as he slashed his blade hard. However, he could only manage to faintly edge the ball and CSK skipper MS Dhoni was safe as houses behind the stumps. Although the umpired raised his finger, the swashbuckler wasn’t really satisfied with the decision.
As a result, he decided to take a review following a brief chat with non-striker Rahul Tripathi. The big screen showcased there’s a clear spike in the snickometer and the decision stood. Notably, each team gets only one review per innings in an IPL match. With Iyer failing to overturn the decision, KKR lost their review and a section of fans weren’t delighted. The 26-year-old was schooled for wasting the DRS call.

Venkatesh Iyer match-winning knocks in his last two outings for KKR
Meanwhile, Iyer has kick-started his IPL career in an emphatic manner. After scoring an unbeaten 41 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on IPL debut, he smashed a match-winning half-century against Mumbai Indians in his following outing. While he was expected to give a hard time to CSK bowlers as well, the three-time champions managed to restrict him.
Speaking of the proceedings of the contest, the coin landed in KKR’s favour and skipper Eoin Morgan opted to bat at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. CSK started off well with Shubman Gill getting dismissed in the very first over. However, Iyer joined forces with Rahul Tripathi and the duo steadied the ship for the Knight Riders.
With dashers like Andre Russell and Dinesh Karthik in the ranks, KKR must back themselves to post a monumental total. At the same time, the MS Dhoni-led side needs to keep the scoring rate as down as possible.
