Are Kolkata Knight Riders the fourth team to qualify for IPL 2021 playoffs? Just not officially! An 86–run win against Rajasthan Royals hasn’t just taken their tally to 14 points but also bolstered their net run rate (+0.587). While RR and Punjab Kings are now officially out of the playoff race, Mumbai Indians need to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by a jaw-dropping margin to go through.
Speaking of match 54, the coin landed in RR’s favour as Sanju Samson elected to bowl first at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.KKR openers Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Prasad embraced the challenge, adding 79 runs for the first wicket. While the latter got out for 38, Gill recorded his second successive half-century of the season.
The likes of Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, and Rahul Tripathi also chipped in with handy cames as KKR posted 171/4. Chasing the challenging total, RR lost wickets at regular intervals and never really looked in the hunt. Although Rahul Tewatia scored a valiant 44, he could lower down the margin of defeat. RR eventually got skittled out for 85, losing the game by 86 runs.
