IPL 2021: MS Dhoni smacks a beautiful six off Prasidh Krishna, brings back old memories
Dhoni's innings of 17 from eight balls was just what fans and CSK needed.
MS Dhoni is back in the IPL 2021. After missing out on a couple of scoring opportunities, the Chennai Super Kings skipper was on a full song during his cameo towards the death overs against Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai on Wednesday, April 21. The former Indian captain hit a six over the mid-wicket boundary, which reminded fans of his brutal hitting.
At the Wankhede Stadium, Chennai got a good start against KKR’s bowling. In the 17th over, Moeen Ali’s wicket fell with the score being at 165 for 2. This is when MS Dhoni decided to come out at no.4 to take on the bowlers. Straight away he was facing Sunil Narine, against whom Dhoni’s record in the IPL wasn’t good at all.
The wicketkeeper-batsman, until tonight, faced 63 balls from Narine in IPL but was never able to hit a boundary. However, he changed this record. In the same over, Narine bowled a no-ball, and Dhoni was facing the free-hit. The Jharkhand player went for a full swing of the bat, but only managed to get a thick edge to get the ball past the wicketkeeper. The free-hit delivery went for a four, and with that MS Dhoni scored his first-ever boundary over Narine in IPL.
MS Dhoni’s cameo takes CSK’s total to 220
But, it was in the next over, that the fans saw the best of MS Dhoni. In the over bowled by Prasidh Krishna, Dhoni first got deceived by a slower ball but managed to somehow get a top edge for a four. In the next delivery, Krishna went for a length ball, MS Dhoni swung hard at it and managed to get the ball over the mid-wicket fielder for a six.
This was the best shot he played in this match, as a matter of fact, in the tournament. The video of the shot was uploaded on the official website of IPL with a caption, “Hammer it like Dhoni”. The 39-year-old was dismissed in the next over by Andre Russell when he smashed a wide yorker straight to Eoin Morgan, who took a lovely catch. Dhoni’s cameo yielded 17 runs off 8 balls.
On the back of Faf du Plessis’ 95*, Moeen Ali’s 12-ball 25, and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 64, CSK finished with a total of 220 for 3 in their 20 overs against Kolkata.
