IPL 2021: Sanju Samson calls Kartik Tyagi ‘Brett Lee’ after the pacer’s heroics against Punjab Kings
Last year, England all-rounder Ben Stokes also drew Tyagi's parallels with the former Australian paceman.
Rajasthan Royals’ fast bowler Kartik Tyagi looked a tad rusty in the first three overs he bowled against the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2021 match on Tuesday, September 21. He leaked 28 runs and was straining to find some rhythm. Despite his indifferent spell, skipper Sanju Samson handed him the ball to defend four in the final over of the Kings’ run-chase.
Tyagi didn’t let his team and captain down by any means. In the final over, he bowled the wide Yorkers with precision, making sure that the Royals snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The right-armer gave away only one run and dismissed Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda. With PBKS needing three runs, Tyagi bowled a dot to Fabian Allen to take RR home.

He also bagged the Player of the Match award and drew praises from Mumbai Indians’ fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah as well. In the meantime, after the game, Samson was heard, calling Tyagi ‘Brett Lee’. In a video uploaded on the Royals’ Instagram handle, the captain praised the speedster.
During the previous edition of the IPL, England cricketer Ben Stokes said that Tyagi’s bowling action is a combination of Lee and Ishant Sharma.
“Tyagi has a run up like Brett Lee and delivers like Ishant Sharma @rajasthanroyals,” Stokes wrote on his Twitter handle. Later, Lee also agreed with the Englishman. “Yeh I can see that mate,” Lee reverted.
New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan, in the meantime, said that Tyagi’s bowling is similar to Lee, Tom Curran and Alzarri Joseph combined. “Tom Curran to start Brett Lee middle Alzarri Joseph delivery,” McClenaghan wrote.
After the match on Tuesday, Samson heaped praises on Tyagi for showing nerves of steel in the final over. He also said how preserving Mustafizur Rahman’s overs for the death worked wonders for the Royals under pressure.
“Somewhere we had that fight left. We knew we had some special bowlers. Kept Mustafizur’s overs for the end. Tyagi was confident with his yorkers, especially wide yorkers. Executed them well against the new batters. And we had top fielding plans for every batter, we have planned till the last batter,” Samson said
