Sunrisers Hyderabad had managed to make it to every IPL playoffs since 2016. This was made sure by some of their key strategies. One of them was David Warner. One can argue that was one of the key aspects through each and every season. Between 2016 and 2020, in each season, Sunrisers seemed to do just about enough to end in the top four.
As a matter of fact, they are the only team to even qualify with six wins. And, that doesn’t happen every season. Not changing a lot despite issues being visible was one of the reasons why Sunrisers Hyderabad’s illusion had to collapse at one point or another. And it did happen in the 2021 season. By the end of seven matches, Hyderabad had seen everything.
They lost their first three matches, then won one. After this, they almost won one but ended up losing in a Super Over. And then, they lost two more. By the time all of this unfolded, Warner was left out of the XI, Kane Williamson was named the skipper of the team and a sad end was inevitable. But then, the IPL got postponed.
SRH looks to turn around grim season into a fightback story
Now, Sunrisers Hyderabad will return with newer hopes to do something magical. Even though it seems highly unlikely that they will qualify for the next round, there is a bit of a chance. But, that involves them winning most of their matches and expecting some results to go in their favor. You see, when a team starts evaluating and calculating the net run rate, other team’s results, and several other scenarios, they are not playing good enough cricket. In summary, the Sunrisers have won one out of their seven matches so far.
Apart from Jonny Bairstow, everyone else will return from the first leg. With Bairstow gone, Sunrisers have gone ahead and signed Sherfane Rutherford. This might just help them to solidify their middle order and could be a blessing in disguise to build a more balanced side. Warner is expected to return to the XI, but that would only be seen when they restart their campaign on September 22, against Delhi Capitals.
