In 2013, an ugly incident happened in the IPL which brought disrepute to the league. Three Rajasthan Royals players, S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan were arrested by the Delhi Police while they were staying at the Trident in Mumbai. The trio was allegedly involved in spot-fixing and betting cases with bookies.

This further led to several other consequences which we will get to in a while. S Sreesanth, at the time, was still fresh after being part of the World Cup side in 2011 but was banned by BCCI for life. All the three players were eventually found not guilty by Patiala House Courts. BCCI also imposed life bans on Chandila and Chavan.

Sreesanth’s life ban was finally lifted in March 2020 by the board and he was allowed to return to professional cricket. He returned to playing for Kerala earlier this year and represented his state team in two domestic limited-overs competitions. He wasn’t shortlisted by the franchises for the IPL 2021 auction.
