IPL 2022: 5 Retained Players who lost their Place in the playing 11
With two new franchises and the mega auction to prepare for, some franchisees were left worse off than others, being limited to just four retentions. Most big names were retentions as expected, but some teams made left-field and intriguing retentions with some shocking omissions as well.
Having been expected to constitute the core of their franchises, some retentions haven’t really worked out, at least till now. All these players were given a run of games at the beginning of the season but they lost their place in the playing elevens.
We look at five such players for whom the tournament didn’t start as well as they or their franchises would’ve hoped. As we approach the business end of the group stage, there is still time left to make a long-lasting impact in this edition of the IPL.
1. Abdul Samad (SRH)
One of the three SRH retentions that surprisingly didn’t include Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, or David Warner was young uncapped allrounder, Abdul Samad.
The 20-year-old, having been part of SRH since 2020, was undoubtedly retained for IPL 2022 with an eye for the future, and although he played the first 2 games he was perhaps prematurely dropped soon after. He hasn’t made an appearance since.
Having made just 4 runs in 2 innings and overseen 2 losses to kick off the campaign, Samad was then dropped and hasn’t been included in the team since. Will SRH go back to him, as the race for the playoffs goes down to the wire?
