IPL 2022 auction: Final squad of all teams and purse remaining

The intense, gruelling IPL 2022 mega auction concluded on February 13. With IPL 2022 set to be a ten-team event and existing teams dissolved, each think tank without exception had their task cut out over the two days to build a team from near scratch, around a handful of pre-auction retentions. Over the two days, 204 (137 Indians and 67 overseas) of the 296 players who went under the hammer earned a deal, but the remaining 93 failed to, with all fracnhises combined spending over INR 551 crore.

As was prophesied by many, Ishan Kishan ended up as this year’s most expensive buy: Mumbai Indians broke the bank to reacquire the wicketkeeper-batter, roping him in for INR 15.25 crore. Shreyas Iyer was avidly chased too, before finally landing in Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 12.25 crore on the first day after an intense bidding war.

With pace bowlers being in high demand – ever more so if they possess an additional skill – Deepak Chahar became Chennai Super Kings’ most expensive buy ever, bagging an INR 14 crore deal after his team refused to budge down against others chasing him.

Pat Cummins got an INR 7.25 crore deal with Kolkata Knight Riders, Prasidh Krishna and Lockie Ferguson bagged INR 10 crore each, going to Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans respectively, whereas Rajasthan Royals occupied Trent Boult for INR 8 crore. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants made Avesh Khan the most expensive uncapped player, shelling out INR 10 crore on him

Punjab Kings, who flew off the blocks quickly on Day 1 by bagging two marquee players – Shikhar Dhawan (INR 8.25 crore) and Kagiso Rabada (INR 9.25 crore) – also bought Jonny Bairstow for INR 6.75 crore. Bairstow’s opening partner at the Sunrisers Hyderabad, David Warner, one of the marquee players, got a contract with Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crore, who also picked all-rounder Mitchell Marsh (INR 6.5 crore).

The Chennai Super Kings switched on a buy-back mode, reacquiring a host of their former players, including Dwayne Bravo, Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa on the first day alongside KM Asif, before reacquiring C Hari Nishaanth and N Jagadeeshan on the second.

Meanwhile, another expected hot pick, Devdutt Padikkal, went to Royals for INR 7.75 crore, who also picked Shimron Hetmyer and R Ashwin for and INR 8.5 and INR 5 crore, respectively.

Other main picks from the first day were Harshal Patel, who returned to RCB for INR 10.75 crore, Shahrukh Khan, who had Punjab Kings spending INR 9 crore, and Jason Holder to Lucknow Super Giants for INR 8.75 crore. Mohammed Shami was Gujarat Titans’ first buy at the mega auction for INR 6.25 crore, who made another steal deal by roping in Jason Roy at his base price of INR 2 crore before spending INR 9 crore on Rahul Tewatia.

On the second day, the biggest spotlight grabber was Jofra Archer, for whom Mumbai Indians saved on the first day, eventually spending INR 8 crore on him in frantic bidding round. However, it was Liam Livingstone’s INR 11.5 crore bagging by Punjab Kings that was the biggest on the day, while Singapore all-rounder Tim David went to Mumbai Indians for an impressive INR 8.25 crore paycheque.

West Indies all-rounder Odean Smith found plenty of teams chasing him before Punjab Kings sealed for INR 6 crore. It became an all-rounders’ day out eventually when Romario Shepherd got a deal for INR 7.75 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Marco Jansen walked back to Mumbai Indians for INR 4.2 crore, Chris Jordan to CSK for INR 3.6 crore, who also snapped Mitchell Santner and Adam Milne for INR 1.9 crore each.

In the accelerated round, some surprisingly-unsold players from earlier got takers, with David Miller (INR 3 crore), Matthew Wade (INR 2.4 crore) and Wriddhiman Saha (INR 1.9 crore) being roped in by Gujarat Titans, while Kolkata Knight Riders bagged Sam Billings, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Nabi (all for INR 2 crore) and Alex Hales at his base price of INR 1 crore. Suresh Raina, Shakib Al Hasan and Ishant Sharma, however, found no takers despite the latter two returning during the accelerated round.
