IPL 2022: Average squad age of all teams in the season

Fielding and running between the wickets are departments in which a player’s athleticism might be restricted due to age. Once a player crosses 35, he/she might lose reflexes and become a liability for the team. However, some cricketers have systematically proved that this hypothesis is not correct. The average age is a measure that reflects a squad’s resolution to make way for the next-gen cricketers. Dropping catches, inability to save boundaries, and incompetency to rotate the strike are some of the characteristics of an aged player. For instance, Chris Gayle, owing to age reasons, does not rotate the strike by taking quick singles. He usually fields in the short third man or short fine leg position as he is not quick enough. In the IPL, where the competition is cut-throat, having a blend of youth and experience becomes important. Here is the average squad age of all teams in IPL 2022 1. Chennai Super Kings – 29 Chennai Super Kings. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Chennai Super Kings had a brilliant run in the previous edition of the competition but they were labeled as ‘Daddy’s Army’ during their comeback campaign due to the lack of young players in the squad. Things have not changed much in terms of the average age of the squad for the men in yellow over the past few years. However, terminating the services of Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis has substantially reduced the mean squad age from 32 to 29. The probability of playing young talents like Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Narayan Jagadeesan, Hari Nishanth, Bhagath Verma, and KM Asif to start a game adoring the yellow jersey is highly unlikely, meaning that the average age of the starting eleven is much higher. 2. Lucknow Super Giants – 28 Lucknow Super Giants. The mean age is increased due to the presence of experienced players like KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Evin Lewis, and Manish Pandey. It is a relatively younger squad that is eyeing its first-ever IPL trophy in the debut season. The uncapped Indians in LSG are an exciting lot to watch as they are being given enough opportunities to prove themselves, thus reducing the mean age of the playing eleven. Ayush Badoni, Ravi Bishnoi, and Avesh Khan are some of the exciting young prospects who have replaced senior players in various departments. 3. Kolkata Knight Riders – 28 Kolkata Knight Riders. With the budding Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer steering things from the front, KKR is trying to bag their third IPL title. The Knight Riders formed their core in the previous edition with rising talents such as Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Mavi, Rahul Tripathi, Rinku Singh, Nitish Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Shubhman Gill. Kuldeep Yadav was sidelined for the most part the entire 2021 season for Varun Chakravarthy, the former being the leading spinner for India in white-ball cricket back then. The management has acquired the services of some blooming players in this year’s auction. Abhijeet Tomar and Sheldon Jackson should be given the shot to run the extra mile if it comes to that. 4. The next-gen cricketers in the squad are Aneeshwar Gautam, Prabhudessai, and Rajat Patidar who bring down the mean age. There are not any restrictions on the squad due to aging, unlike Chennai Super Kings. RCB has a commanding squad with an equal balance of experience and agility in all the departments. 5. Punjab Kings – 27 Punjab Kings team. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Punjab Kings released their power-hitters David Miller and Glenn Maxwell in the previous auctions, garnering enough money to buy proven local talents in the hopes of lifting the trophy for the first time. The reduction in the mean age from the previous season is due to the inclusion of young performers like Raj Bawa, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Chahar, Odean Smith, and Kagiso Rabada. Not to forget the younger players who were already retained contribute vastly to a lower mean age. The Punjab Kings have also recruited some experienced players this year like Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Sandeep Sharma, etc., which maintains the overall balance of the team in both the batting and bowling department. 6. Rajasthan Royals – 27 Rajasthan Royals. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The relatively younger squad of the 2022 IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals are led by fearless wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. Steve Smith was relieved from captaincy responsibilities and released from the team in the previous year. Anunay Singh, Shubham Garhwal, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Sen, Riyan Parag, and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the Indian youngsters who have a vital role to play, for Rajasthan this season. Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, Obed McCoy, Tejas Baroka, and Navdeep Saini were picked by Rajasthan in this year’s auction demonstrating that Rajasthan Royals’ management has decided and trusted their youngsters to bring home the trophy that has been missing after the inaugural season. 7. They have a terrific on-paper squad with a well-mixed combination of young and experienced players. Noor Ahmed, Alzarri Joseph, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sai Kishore, Shubhman Gill, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan are the youngsters who will play a vital role for Gujarat in this season. Gujarat also has the advantage of having the experienced Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Mohammed Shami, Wriddhiman Saha, and Mathew Wade on their side which makes them an ideal side with a perfect combination. 8. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 26 Sunrisers Hyderabad. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Sunrisers Hyderabad have got a versatile squad as many players can fit into different roles. They have got a balanced side with more young players. Abdul Samad, Priyam Garg, Umran Malik, Washington Sundar, Marco Jansen, Kartik Tyagi, Nicholas Pooran, and Shreyas Gopal are all young and upcoming talents who shape the nucleus of the team. They have experienced stars like Aiden Markram, Rahul Tripathi, Sean Abbott, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, and Kane Williamson, who are not a liability due to the age factor. The playing eleven has a lesser mean age this season due to the release of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow. 9. Delhi Capitals – 26 Delhi Capitals. The mean age is decreased due to the release of players like Ravi Ashwin, Amit Mishra, and Ajinkya Rahane. It is a relatively younger squad that is eyeing its first-ever IPL trophy. The uncapped Indians in DC are an exciting lot to watch as they are given enough opportunities to prove themselves thus reducing the mean age of the playing eleven. Prithvi Shaw, Yash Dhull, Sarfaraz Khan, and Mustafizur Rahman are some of the exciting young prospects who have replaced senior players in various departments. 10. Mumbai Indians – 26 Mumbai Indians. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mumbai Indians are the youngest and most well-balanced side on paper this season. They are looking forward to winning the title for the 6th time under the guidance of Rohit Sharma. Dewald Brewis, Tim David, Ishan Kishan, Mayank Markande, Riley Meredith, and Jofra Archer, are some of the players who drastically bring down the mean squad age. Mumbai Indians do not have any performers who might be sidelined due to the age factor. Tilak Verma and Arjun Tendulkar are two new young additions to an existing young squad. However, the mean age of the playing eleven is slightly higher as the number of players aged above 27-28 is more.
