Inspired by India’s win in the T20 World Cup 2007, the Indian Premier League was introduced as a new concept to allow the players from different countries to rub shoulders with each other and play for the same team. Over these years, it has provided a platform for the Indian as well as overseas youngsters to showcase their talent to the entire world.

The Emerging Player of the Year award has been presented to the youngsters since the 2008 season. The players eligible should have featured in five or less Test matches or 20 or less ODIs, and should have been a part of 25 or less IPL matches.

The notable players receiving this award are Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill over the years. The likes of Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad won this award in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The only overseas player to win this award was Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman in 2016.

“I will only consider players, who have started playing this season, and I am gonna go with Ayush Badoni. There are others like Tilak Varma is doing very well. The pacer Arshdeep Singh has done well, but is playing for few years now,” Deep Dasgupta told CricTracker’s ‘Not Just Cricket’ show presented by Sky247.net.

Dasgupta chose the youngster Badoni to bag the emerging player of the award in IPL 2022. Featuring for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), he has made giant strides to score 134 runs and pick a single wicket from eight appearances so far. In his debut appearance against Gujarat Titans, Badoni mustered 55 off 41 balls. Apart from this knock, he played a couple of quickfire knocks to seal the game for the team.

Dasgupta thinks Tilak Varma is also one of the contenders for this prestigious award due to his performances for Mumbai Indians (MI). In eight innings, he has amassed 272 runs and has looked confident of his abilities, and is the leading run-scorer of the MI team in the ongoing season.

He further picked Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Arshdeep Singh, who has already featured in more than 25 matches of the tournament, and will not be eligible. In 31 appearances, he has scalped 33 wickets at an economy of 8.58
