As per the latest developments, the Delhi Capitals camp has been hit by the COVID-19 scare with a player testing positive. The team has subsequently cancelled their scheduled travel to Pune ahead of their next game in IPL 2022. Players and other members of the team have undergone quarantine in their rooms wherein door-to-door COVID tests will be conducted on Monday (April 18) and Tuesday (April 19).

Earlier, the team’s physio Patrick Farhart contracted the virus and he subsequently underwent isolation. On this occasion, a player has been tested positive and these are not good signs for the tournament. It must be noted that IPL 2021 was postponed midway through last year amid the COVID-19 crisis and was later shifted to the UAE. Hence, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would like to avoid any such mishap this time around.

Dark clouds looming over Delhi Capitals’ next fixture

According to Cricbuzz, the said player, who is a foreigner, has tested positive on the Rapid Antigen Test. He will undergo further RT-PCR test to confirm the result. The other players and members of the squad will also undergo COVID tests before travelling to Pune for their next assignment. Notably, the Capitals are scheduled to cross swords with Punjab Kings at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Wednesday (April 20).

As per the rules enforced by the BCCI, fixtures of teams failing to field a playing XI amid COVID-19 crisis will be postponed. If that’s not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee and a final decision will be taken.

“BCCI, at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season if a team cannot field a playing XI due to COVID-19. If this is not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee,” states the rule. Meanwhile, we are almost at the end of the first leg of IPL 2022. So far, all matches have been conducted smoothly and the BCCI would not want any hassle in the upcoming games as well.
