The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians’ newest recruit, Dewald Brevis, played some excellent shots during his first nets session ahead of the IPL 2022 season. The 18-year-old has been nicknamed ‘Baby AB’ due to the resemblance of his batting style with former South African batter, AB de Villiers.
In a one-minute video shared by Mumbai Indians on their YouTube page, the young batter played shots along the ground to get himself settled at first. However, as soon as Brevis got his eyes in, the youngster unleashed an array of big shots and some reverse sweeps as well. The 18-year-old displayed his range of shots and proved that he is also a 360-degree player just like his idol de Villiers.

Brevis performed superbly in the recently concluded U19 World Cup. The right-handed batter amassed a total of 506 runs at a staggering average of 84.33, with three fifties and two hundreds to his name. The 18-year-old’s brilliant performance in the tournament caught the attention of many IPL teams. The right-handed-batter was bagged by the five-time champions at a cost of INR three crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction held in Bengaluru. However, it remains to be seen whether the young batter can prove his worth in the toughest cricketing league in the world.
Brevis has tremendous self-belief and that is visible in the fearless brand of cricket that he plays. If Mumbai Indians somehow find a place for the South African in their starting XI and he begins to perform regularly, then Brevis could certainly be the top contender for the prestigious Emerging Player of the Tournament award.
Meanwhile, the five-time champions will start their tournament against the strong-looking Delhi Capitals. The match will be played at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on March 27 (Sunday). It is expected to be a thrilling contest between Rohit Sharma’s men and the Capitals led by fearless wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.
